SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customers at two Walmart stores in the North County say they received hundreds of dollars in fake bills.Last Thursday night, Billy Wagner went to the Walmart on Center Drive in San Marcos and cashed out a ,000 money transfer from a friend on the east coast."Watched the lady count the money on the counter three times," said Wagner.On the same night - and about five miles away in Escondido - John Whittingham stopped by the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Valley Parkway to cash a check, receiving four 0 bills. "You won't believe it. These two 0 bills are counterfeit. We marked them, and they're not coming in," said Whittingham.Meanwhile, Wagner's bills were also raising suspicions."I couldn't them unstuck to count them," said Wagner. Questions linger. Where did the money come from? How many other customers got the bills? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say with the summer months well underway, they've seen an uptick in the number of children that have needed to be rescued from private pools after nearly drowning.Officials say there have been 49 rescues in private pools, beaches, and bays from March through July, compared to 37 in the same period in 2019 and 33 in 2018. Nearly all of those rescued this year have needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment.Of those 49 that occurred this year, 28 were in pools and 14 were in the ocean, lakes, or bays. The rest did not report a specific body of water. Many public pools have been closed since March due to the pandemic."Parents and guardians must take the necessary precautions to keep these incidents from happening," said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said. "Children who swim in pools at home are at higher risk of drowning, especially as parents struggle to supervise their children while continuing to work at home through the summer months because of the novel coronavirus."The county says it's important to teach children to swim, never leave a child unsupervised in or near water, avoid alcohol if you're swimming, and learn CPR.At home, the county recommends installing a fence around the pool and hot tub, installing pool alarms, and keeping an eye on drains and pool toys that could be a tripping hazard. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a State of Emergency Proclamation Friday clearing the way for firefighters to jump on projects meant to protect communities.Newsom said we're seeing larger and more dangerous wildfires than ever before and as a state we need to change our approach."Our world is changing, the wets are getting a lot wetter, the hots hotter and the dry, drier," he said.Alpine shared in the devastation last year; the West Fire leveled neighborhoods and left dozens homeless.CalFire Director Michael Mohler said ten crews across the state will be activated under the proclamation to clear brush and conduct controlled burns. They will also work with 110 members of the National Guard.The proclamation focuses on vulnerable communities. CalFire's Priority Fuel Reduction Project List includes two communities in San Diego County, Guatay and Crest. "Some of them have gone through some kind of environmental review," Director of the Sierra Club, Katheryn Phillips said.The U.S. Forest Service plans prescribed burns a year in advance to account for the environmental processes."We already know the areas of concern and we know how the fire is going to react to those areas, so we have a lot of biologists come in, a lot of fire experts come in and determine which areas are good for burning," Public Affairs Officer for Cleveland National Forest Olivia Walker said.Under the proclamation, environmental regulations are suspended, concerning environmentalists."If it's a butterfly mating season and it's an endangered species, it's not going to be the proper time to burn," Walker said."Could an unintended consequence be a mudslide?" But the for-profit college, with three locations in San Diego County, may have violated California law by not giving workers proper notice.The state’s WARN Act requires employers with at least 75 workers - which multiple employees say Brightwood had - at least 60 days notice (and pay) before a mass layoff.But Brightwood did not notify the workers or the state before announcing the shutdown.
