BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices.The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan. Further, the company's steel output in the first half of the year gained 29.75 percent year on year to 8.04 million tonnes.China's producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 6 percent in the January-June period, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics.However, the company was likely to face a "difficult time" in the second half of 2010 and meeting its full-year profit target would become a "challenging task" as demand from auto, home appliance and real estate sectors experienced "drastic changes" since July, leading to more restrained sales and falling prices, it said.Company officials also worried that high prices of iron ore, coal and electricity would further push up production costs and squeeze profit margins.On Friday, the price of its shares fell 2.87 percent to 4.73 yuan on the Shanghai bourse.

TOKYO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- New Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa on Friday called for deepening of Sino-Japanese mutually beneficial strategic relations."In recent years the leaders of the two countries have created a conducive environment for the development of bilateral ties. I am very glad to see that," Niwa told Chinese press in Tokyo.Upon his assignment to China, the Japanese ambassador said China and Japan, as close neighbors, should deal with each other for the upcoming 1,000 or 2,000 years rather than 10 or 20 years. In the long run, both countries share a lot of common interests, and a stable, friendly relationship is the ultimate goal.The former president of Itochu Corp. said that he aimed to boost communication, strengthen economic cooperation, and build on the mutual trust between the leaders of the two countries.Niwa also said in the age of multipolarization, no one can conduct diplomacy with knowledge of China alone. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus would likely fall noticeably this year as exports outlook would not be optimistic while imports would remain robust, Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said at a briefing Saturday.Exports growth would slow after July, Yao forecast, adding the surge in exports in May was due to a low comparison basis last year. China's exports in May surged 48.5 percent year on year, customs data released Thursday.China's trade surplus in the first five months fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars. The figure in 2009 topped 196.07 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.2 percent year on year.Yao attributed the weak export outlook to the European sovereign debt crisis, rising commodity prices and labor costs."In the following months, the fallout from the debt crisis in Europe would gradually become apparent, and China would closely watch changes in its important exports markets including Germany, Spain and Italy," Yao said.China would maintain stable trade policies amid the crisis, and might adjust some policies in some specific industries for environmental protection purposes."Stable trade policies are a top priority when the external outlook is not clear," he said.Yao also told reporters that attempts by some U.S. lawmakers to include China's exchange rate policy into trade investigations on China's exports of aluminum extrusions and coated paper lacked factual support and did not conform to rules of the World Trade Organization.The WTO regulated trade policies instead of a country's overall financial or foreign exchange policies, he said.

DUNHUA, Jilin, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- When a flash flood struck their village ten days ago, 55-year-old Fu Bailin and his relatives had no time to take any belongings as they fled, except for a bill of debt."All our belongings have been swept away. My 100-square-meter house was flattened. My 2.5-hectares of cropland was destroyed," said Fu, a soybean and corn farmer at the Yaodianzi Village in Dunhua City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast China's Jilin Province.All the houses of the 286 families in the village were destroyed. Fu's family, including Fu, his 70-year-old father, his wife and son, along with their fellow villagers, now live in temporary tents in the local forest police headquarters in Dunhua. The forest police also provide meals for them.Floods have left 85 people dead and 66 missing in Jilin over the past two months, local authorities said Saturday.More than 5 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 1.5 million people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, almost 82,000 houses have collapsed and 198,000 others have been damaged, the statement said.Economic losses were estimated at 45 billion yuan (6.6 billion U.S.dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.Compounding the problems, more downpours were forecast to hit the province in the coming two days.

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- China's government is to step up efforts to strengthen administration by law and to raise its executive ability and credibility, said a government statement Wednesday.Some local governments and departments had prominent problems of defying the law in administration and greater efforts must be paid to build government by law, said the statement released after an executive meeting of China's State Council, or Cabinet, which was chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday.The making of major policies must be subject to procedures such as soliciting of public opinions, consultations with experts, risk analysis, legality assessment and group decision-making, it said.The government must optimize the system of public opinion solicitation in drafting administrative laws and regulations, and enforce the law in a strict, just way, it said.The statement said public supervision of the government must be strengthened by making government affairs more transparent and ensuring the rights of the public and the media to report wrongdoing.The government must fully implement of the policy of holding officials accountable for any malpractice or dereliction of duty, it said.The government must also play a greater role mediating disputes and actively guide the public to appeal and settle disputes in accordance with the law.
