The United States has reached another grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s death toll has surpassed 170,000, Johns Hopkins data showed Monday morning. On Sunday alone, deaths in the U.S. rose by over 480, according to a Reuters tally, with Florida, Texas and Louisiana reporting the most fatalities. The U.S. continues to lead the world in deaths and the number of cases reported, with at least 5.4 million people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in the country. Johns Hopkins shows the next highest country is Brazil, with over 3.3 million diagnosed and 107,000 dead.Citing a national ensemble forecast, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last Thursday that estimates show the U.S. could reach 200,000 deaths from COVID-19 by Labor Day weekend. The head of the CDC says the pandemic could become even more dire in the months to come. Director Robert Redfield told WebMD that “this could be the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we’ve ever seen.”The reason? Redfield points to the combination of the COVID-19 surge and flu season. He said, "we're going to have COVID in the fall, we're going to have flu in the fall."The CDC continues to encourage Americans to wash their hands, socially distance themselves, wear masks, and avoid large gatherings.Click here to learn more about how the CDC recommends you protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. 1410

The world has spent the last several months wearing masks in public, avoiding gatherings and, in general, spending less time outside the home. But a new report suggests household transmission is one of the most common ways COVID-19 is spreading; an individual is most likely to contract COVID-19 from their spouse or significant other. That conclusion is part of a new report from the University of Florida which was published in the journal JAMA Network Open on Monday. Researchers looked at the results of 54 studies across 20 countries that included nearly 78,000 subjects. They found more than one in three, roughly 38%, of COVID-19 patients passed the virus to their spouses or significant others they live with."Infection risk was highest for spouses, followed by non-spouse family members and other relatives, which were all higher than other [close] contacts," the authors wrote. In the studies, about 17% of COVID-19 patients transmitted the virus to children they live with.Anyone living in the same home as someone who has contracted the coronavirus is at a heightened risk, but researchers say spouses and significant others are more likely to pass along the virus for various reasons, including "intimacy, sleeping in the same room, or longer or more direct exposure to index cases," according to the report's authors. The researchers found no significant difference between male and female transmission rates inside the home.A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 53% of people who live with someone who has COVID-19 will contract the virus within seven days.Health experts have urged those who have COVID-19 or have symptoms to wear a mask in their home, and isolate within the home as much as possible away from others under the same roof. 1798

The Transportation Security Administration says they found three times the rate of loaded guns at checkpoints in July than they did at the exact time last year, despite fewer passengers traveling due to the coronavirus pandemic. In a press release, the agency said that 80% of the firearms that come through a checkpoint are loaded. "It’s just an accident waiting to happen," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in the release.TSA said they found 15.3 guns per million people screened last month, which is up from the rate of 5.1 guns per million people in July 2019.The agency says that's alarming because they screened 75% fewer travelers last month.“TSA is diligently working to ensure our employees and passengers are safe and secure while traveling during a pandemic, and yet we are noticing a significant increase in loaded firearms coming into checkpoints,” said Pekoske in the press release. “Travelers must understand that firearms are prohibited items at airports and in the passenger cabins of aircraft. As hard as we are working to mitigate other risks at this time, no one should be introducing new ones.”Guns are permitted in checked bags, but they must be unloaded, and in a locked case, TSA said.Last year, 4,432 guns were found in carry-on bags at checkpoints nationwide, which is about 12.1 firearms per day, and 87% of them were loaded, the agency said. 1380

The Trump campaign has filed a second lawsuit to stop ballot counting the day after the election. This time in Pennsylvania. In a release sent to supporters, the president’s campaign says they are taking several legal actions concerning Pennsylvania ballots. The first is they are “moving to intervene in the existing Supreme Court litigation over the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s unlawful extension of the mail-in ballot receipt deadline.”Trump’s campaign is also filing suit to stop ballot counting because they claim election officials are counting and processing ballots out of sight of Republican poll observers.“In Philadelphia and elsewhere, Democrat officials forced our observers to stay 25 feet or more from the counting process, leaving no meaningful way whatsoever for our observers to do their jobs,” the statement from Justin Clark, Trump’s deputy campaign manager, reads. With about 84 percent of the ballots counted, Trump leads Biden by almost 300,000 votes. This is similar language used by the Trump campaign when they said they filed in Michigan Wednesday morning. The Trump campaign says it is calling for a temporary halt in the counting in Michigan until it is given “meaningful access” in numerous locations and allowed to review ballots that already have been opened and processed. Trump is running slightly behind Democratic nominee Joe Biden in Michigan. 1387
