SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Dance is a way to lose yourself and escape. For students taking the Ballet for Me! Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Come February, SeaWorld San Diego is hoping to fill the night sky over Mission Bay with the lights of a drone show.The California Coastal Commission began considering their proposal for a test run at a hearing near San Francisco Thursday.For decades, fireworks capped off a day of summer fun at SeaWorld. A few years ago - amid ongoing concerns over impacts on wildlife, water quality and pets - SeaWorld scaled back the shows, in favor of laser light shows. Now comes another high-flying option in the form of the drone light shows like those that have wowed at places like Universal Studios and Disney World. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California state Assemblyman and San Deigo mayoral candidate Todd Gloria said he received serious threats of physical violence through social media Wednesday evening.Officials from Gloria's campaign said Thursday that the threats have been reported to the San Diego Police Department and are being investigated. ABC 10News reached out to SDPD Thursday regarding the threats, but the department did not immediately respond.Gloria's campaign said the threats come after former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio flooded voters with texts attacking Gloria for his support of SB-145.The bill lets a judge decide whether to force someone to register as a sex offender in certain circumstances after having sex with a minor. The bill is meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.RELATED: Ad accuses Barbara Bry of sleeping on the jobGloria said DeMaio's texts to voters are an effort to support Gloria's opponent in the mayoral race, City Councilmember Barbara Bry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crowds have been sparse at Balboa Park since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn't mean the park hasn't been busy."The change in Balboa Park is evident. The change in Balboa Park is important," says Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.Comiskey says nearly every museum in the park has used the unexpected downtime to refresh their exhibits or renovate their facility. That includes large-scale renovations at the Timken and Mingei Museums."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey.RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to the parkBut it's not just museums. The 100-year old carousel is getting refurbished. Crews are almost finished building an observation deck around the Morton Bay Fig Tree. Five new cottages in the International Village are about to open up, housing 9 new cultural groups. "We want to do our part to help elevate the Palisades and revitalize it in the way that Plaza de Panama was."The pandemic allowed the Comic-Con Museum to get a head start on their online offerings, while still working on building renovations and exhibit planning.The Starlight plans show new terraced lawn seating, nature gardens, walking trails, and smaller stages surrounding the main bowl.Save Starlight President Steve Stopper says work is already underway on some of the smaller parts of the renovation, so they can build excitement over the coming months."It creates a window for people to get behind the idea," he says. "They can see this is really viable for the future."Stopper says it's an exciting time to be around the park, as it adds more gems to the Crown Jewel of San Diego. 2669
