SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Coast Guard rescued 13 Mexican nationals from the waters off the coast of La Jolla Saturday.The rescue, located near the Children's Pool, was reported just before 8 a.m., according to the Coast Guard. The 13 individuals, one woman and 12 men, were rescued from a panga boat and brought to shore.Border Patrol officials took the individuals into custody and officials believe they were trying to enter the country illegally.RELATED: One person hurt, possible drug packages found after boat washes ashore in CarlsbadPanga boat attempts to illegally have seen a sharp increased since 2010, according to Border Patrol, as land borders have tightened.Just last month, one person was found injured around several packages of marijuana washed ashore in Carlsbad. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Tuesday morning a human chain formed outside of Rady Children’s Hospital to mark the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month.Hand in hand, dressed in blue, child health and welfare experts, law enforcement agencies, community members and leaders banded together to show support.“This is a circle of support for children,” said Dr. Suzanne Starling, medical director of the Chadwick Center. “We are holding hands to show we are encircling children with all the hope and all the services we can provide for them.”The human chain formed around the Hospital’s iconic Inspiration Fountain.“Child abuse is a very large problem, thousands and thousands of children in the United States are abused every day,” said Starling.She said abused children not only suffer physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.Starling said she hopes San Diegans can stand up for children and keep child abuse prevention in mind, even after April.If you suspect a child is being abused, you can report it by calling this 24-hour hotline 1-800-344–6000 or click here for more resources. 1089

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Video posted to Facebook Wednesday showing a violent encounter between a Pacific Beach worker and homeless man has already gained hundreds of shares and comments.You can see someone come out of B-Mo's Sandwich Shop on Garnet Avenue and push a table into a shirtless man's head, then begin throwing his belongings into the street. 10News reached out to the owner of B-Mo's but were told he wasn't available for an interview Thursday.But Pacific Beach locals who saw the video told 10News the video shows San Diego's homelessness issue has reached a boiling point locally."If you look at the video you can tell it's at the point of escalation," said Mike Bremer, who owns a nearby tattoo shop.Bremer says while he might not agree with how things played out, he understands how it could happen. "I don't condone using that kind of violence I'm here to support because something needs to be done," Bremer said.Bremer and other locals said they deal with issues related to the homeless on a near daily basis and it can make doing business difficult. Thursday, two San Diego Police officers arrived at B-Mo's, but wouldn't comment. A spokesperson for SDPD said officers were initially called out when the confrontation happened but the homeless man wasn't cooperative and the other man didn't want any further action taken. Police said Thursday in light of the video evidence they've now opened up a criminal investigation into the incident. It's unclear if anyone will be charged. 1502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whitney Climenson noticed something at her recent shift at a Carslabd restaurant. It wasn’t nearly as crowded, and there were only three people on the clock - about half the normal level. She's instead spending most of her time trying to get through to the Employment Development Department, and figure out why weeks of her jobless benefits are still unpaid. “I would wait for hours on hold if it meant talking to somebody, but they just say ‘Oh, we can't take your call at this time,” Climenson said. Climenson's one of more than 200,000 San Diego County workers who lost their jobs in March and April amid the coronavirus pandemic - a number that many economists expected to grow in May. “Here in San Diego a bigger portion of our economy is in food and drinking establishment employment, and so what we would see then is a big rebound in that area as well locally,” said Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego. The hiring - already picking up locally. Andrew Feghali just opened Dave’s Hot Chicken in Pacific Beach. He’s hosting a job fair Monday with at least 10 openings. “We start above minimum wage, so we want to make sure we get the best and the brightest, and another perk is that you get free food,” Feghali said. But like many restaurants, Dave’s is not opening for in-house dining - that means while hiring is picking up, many restaurant jobs won't come back for a while - if at all. 1435
