A 14-year-old girl was killed and four others injured when falling rocks hit their car at the Glacier National Park in Montana.The rocks hit the top of the car Monday night and shattered the rear windshield. In addition to killing the girl, rocks also injured her parents and two other children in the vehicle, the park said in a statement.It estimated the rocks were between fist-sized and 12 inches in diameter along with enough debris from the rockfall to fill the bed of a pickup truck. The incident happened near the East Tunnel on the popular and mountainous Going-to-the-Sun Road.An ambulance that responded could not airlift the girl because of her unstable condition, the park said.Flight paramedics traveled with her using ground ambulance to Kalispell, Montana. She died while being transported to a local hospital, the park said."The two adults suffered significant bruises and were transported to area hospitals. The two other children in the vehicle had minor injuries and also went by ambulance to the hospital," the park said.The victims were visiting from Utah, and authorities will release their names once family notifications are complete. Going-to-the-Sun Road was closed briefly Monday night while crew cleared the rocks and a tow truck removed the vehicle.The last fatal injury from rockfall on the Going-to-the-Sun Road was in 1996 when a vehicle was struck, according to the park. 1417

A House panel passed a bill Wednesday to authorize additional funding for the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund until 2090, one day after comedian Jon Stewart sharply criticized members of Congress for not attending a subcommittee hearing on the issue and gave an emotional plea to extend the funding.The bill passed on a voice vote without opposition and now heads to the House floor for the full chamber to vote. The vote comes after the fund's administrator announced awards for pending and future claims would have to be cut unless Congress acted."Every sick responder and survivor should be treated with the same dignity and compassion," said House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York. "All responders and survivors, whether they got sick in 2015 or will get sick in 2025 or 2035, should be properly compensated. As a university employee, he's not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam — until this one."The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank," he said.With his caller ID showing his bank's number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank's fraud department."He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge," Lander said.It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank's app.The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank."My user ID had been removed," he said.A few minutes later, he got more alerts from the bank, and that's when he really started to worry."They changed my username, my password, my card PIN and set up a Zelle account."Scammers open Zelle accountLander had never used Zelle before, but it is a money transfer app similar to Venmo that is automatically offered to customers at almost a dozen big banks around the country, including Bank of America, Key Bank, Chase and Fifth Third.Suddenly, Lander watched helplessly as another text alerted him that his brand new Zelle account sent ,000 to a disposable cellphone number."They transferred funds to someone I've never met before," he said,Panicking, he called the bank's customer service number, where he learned the bank had not initiated any fraud call.In fact, to Fifth Third, it appeared that he had made all the changes to his account since he entered a verification code that essentially gave the keys to his account to a scammer.Why this scam is so worrisomeWhat's scary is that this scam doesn't require a thief to gain access to your ATM card or a blank check they found somewhere, as bank theft required in the past.All it takes is a text or call claiming to be from your bank's "fraud department" and they can get into your account.
