SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six months after closing its doors to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SeaWorld San Diego is reopening through their weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. The special event will take place every weekend until SeaWorld can fully open. The park's attractions will be very limited, with guests able to enjoy all outdoor animals exhibits and shows."We’re opening as an accredited zoo and you can come in and enjoy all the live animal presentations we’re world famous for like the Orca Encounter, dolphins, Sea Lions Live and all the outdoor exhibits that people love and miss," said SeaWorld Park President Marilyn Hannes..Among closed signs for indoor exhibits, game rooms and rides, guests will also notice dozens of sanitizer stations, distance markers and download codes for digital park maps spread throughout.Visitors will also be able to continue enjoying the tide pool areas. "The water is highly filtrated, each of the systems were designed to be a touch pool so they have a high filtration and so that constant turnout makes it safe to do the interaction," Hannes said.Although some of the attractions are closed, Hannes said new ones will take its place, adding, "We’ve opened up Vistas to the Bay so we have a new waterfront area where you can that ocean breeze and try craft beers."Zoo Days will take place every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The event has a limited capacity and purchasing a ticket online acts as a reservation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University set a new record for its Aztec Rock Hunger annual food drive, collecting 590,503 pounds of food from Sept. 28 through Oct. 21, which the school will now donate to the Jacobs & Cushman Food Bank. The amount exceeds last years total of 588,915 pounds, and includes both non-perishable foods and  donations, which the school collected at the SDSU bookstore, athletic events, SDSU Dining locations and Aztec Proud events. Jim Flores, CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, said the partnership with the school, which has raised more than two million pounds of food since its inception in 2008, has been beneficial."We are very grateful to the students, faculty and administration at San Diego State University for supporting the food bank," Flores said. "We are currently feeding more than 37,000 people every month in communities throughout the county, including thousands of students through our College Hunger-relief Program." Aztecs Rock Hunger was started by Associated Students (A.S.) which works alongside multiple campus groups, including SDSU Athletics and the College Area Business District. Christian Onwuka, A.S. vice president of financial affairs, said the partnership is a source of pride. "It has been amazing to see so many different divisions and facets of campus come together and give their all toward this campaign fighting food insecurity," he said. Not all of the donations will go to the food bank, however. 20 percent of the food remaining on campus will go towards helping SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT works to prevent food insecurity for students on campus, as well as provide emergency support for those in a sudden economic crisis.  1894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Small businesses that take the government up on its low-interest loan proposal may not end up paying any of the money back under certain circumstances. As part of the Coronavirus economic stimulus bill in Congress, the Federal Government would make available upwards of 0 billion in low-interest loans of 2.75 to 3.75 percent for many businesses under 500 workers. The loans would help employers who are suffering amid the economic shutdown stay afloat in the short term. Additionally, for businesses that maintain payroll or meet certain hiring requirements, the government may forgive the loan entirely. "This could be a vital safety net for many of these companies that might close, and for their employees who might not have any other source of income during this painful period," said Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University. Small businesses and workers in San Diego have been hit hard amid the outbreak. The San Diego Workforce Partnership estimates 350,000 employees could be laid off, many from service sector jobs that don't have the option to work at home. Those jobs are largely in retail, accomodation, and restaurants.At The French Gourmet in Pacific Beach, owner Michel Malecot says sales are down 90 percent and that the restaurant and its catering business have lost 0,000.
