BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) vowed to step up regulation of sugar markets on Sunday after reserves helped stabilize prices which recently rose to a record high amid continuing harsh weather.Between Oct. 10-17, the retail price of small-packed sugar averaged 7.68 yuan per kilogram in major cities, up 1.3 percent from the end of September, according to data provided by the MOC.It shows that prices have begun to stabilize, according to the MOC website. The ministry also vowed to strengthen market regulations.China auctioned 210,000 tonnes of sugar reserves on Oct. 22 in a bid to curb soaring prices, which have been blamed on this season's frequent extreme weather in China's major sugar-producing areas, as well as reduced supplies overseas.In southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the country's major sugar-growing area, sugar prices hit a record 6,000 yuan per tonne (902.3 U.S. dollars) on Oct. 11.Further, sugar futures hit an eight-month high of 683.20 pounds per tonne in London on Oct. 15.Also, the MOC said government reserves remain abundant and pledged to improve market supplies and ensure the public's needs.Between October 2009 and September 2010, eight batches of reserve sugar, or a total of 1.71 million tonnes, were auctioned, according to the MOC.

We should deepen reform while promoting administration in accordance with the laws in order to solve new problems," he said.According to Wen, a sound market environment with fair competition can only be created when the government uses laws and regulations to manage various market entities, provide services for them and ensure their rights.He urged officials to strengthen legislation in key fields in order to solve deep-seated problems in the economic and social development, and ensure public ideas be fully reflected during the legislation process.Further, Wen called for scientific and democratic decision-making."Before making a major decision, the idea must be examined as to whether it is in accordance with the laws. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues.
