SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As San Diego sporting associations work to recruit new officials, they're up against abuse from parents and fans.The problem has gotten so bad that one youth soccer referee created a Facebook page to call out the bad behavior, parent shaming in hopes to address the problem nationwide.Kia Dehpanah has been officiating in San Diego for 25 years. While he does hear complaints from the sideline, he says younger referees deal with it the most.RELATED: Eastlake Little League responds to Park View player eligibility complaint"After a while, these young referees say, 'I don't need this aggravation,'" said Dehpanah.Last year, some youth sports like field hockey and lacrosse had to cancel some games due to not enough referees. These sports face additional recruiting challenges like finding officials who can work early games. There's also a misconception you must have prior knowledge of the sport beforehand."It's not the most glorified profession, it's a tough profession, but I think it has a lot of rewards too," said San Diego CIF Commissioner, Jerry Schniepp.Alicia Oswald, on the San Diego Girl's Lacrosse Umpiring Board, uses officiating as a way to give back to the community. She hopes parents and fans will hear this message so that potential recruits aren't too intimidated to go after the job."We are people too, we are humans," said Oswald. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chief Border Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison apologized Wednesday after a binational garden at the border was bulldozed. Harrison said on Twitter he met with Friends of Friendship Park and apologized for the “unintentional destruction of the garden.”“The original intent was to have the garden trimmed. We take full responsibility, are investigating the event, & look forward to working with FoFP on the path forward,” Harrison continued. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man Thursday they say had more than 100 pounds of narcotics in his car.According to the agency, the arrest happened just before 11 a.m. on October 8 along Interstate 15 near Vista.Border Patrol says agents initiated a vehicle stop “on a suspicious 2015 Chevy Camaro” when a K-9 alerted authorities.After searching the car, agents found 68 bundles of cocaine and crystal meth hidden inside the vehicle’s quarter panels and cowling. The narcotics have an estimated street value of more than 8,000.The driver, who is a US citizen, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency.Since October 1, Border Patrol says it has seized over 491 pounds of cocaine, 7,169 pounds of methamphetamine, 178 pounds of heroin, and 383 pounds of fentanyl. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least two teachers are on leave pending investigations at Southwest Middle School in Otay Mesa West. A spokesperson for Sweetwater Union High School District confirms the investigations, saying the teachers are not allowed on campus at the current time.10News uncovered the investigations when a viewer reported that his daughter had been interviewed in the case. He says an assistant principal questioned her about one teacher's behavior, including conduct that could be considered sexually inappropriate.The father, who asked 10News not to use his name, says he's upset that he was not notified by the school before his daughter was brought in for questioning. "I would have preferred my wife to be there, or I could have had the chance to say no, I don't want her interviewed because these are very serious, morbid conversations to have with 12-year-old girls," the father said.He says the only communication he has had from the school is a robocall voicemail the day after the questioning to notify him that it had occurred and suggesting he ask his student about the topics discussed.A district spokesperson says they are limited in what information can be released by privacy and personnel issues. 1233

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County Supervisors Wednesday sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom asking him to take a second look at San Diego, potentially allowing shuttered businesses to reopen amid COVID-19. In the letter, Supervisors Kristin Gaspar, Jim Desmond, and Councilmember Chris Cate of the sixth district said Newsom’s “one-size-fits-all approach to closing entire business sectors is misguided as evidenced by the many sectors in San Diego forced to close their doors again despite not having contributed at all to the rise in our local cases.”Supervisors also pushed the governor to give more control to local leaders and health officials.
