CHERRY VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Apple Fire in Riverside County has almost doubled in the last day. As of 5:00 p.m. Sunday, it has grown to 20,516 acres, with 0% containment. Mandatory evacuations are in place for more than 7,000 people. Authorities believe this may have been caused by arson. This weekend, multiple San Diego fire agencies are helping fight the Apple Fire. Experts say our local agencies are equipped to support the fight in Riverside and any incidents at home. The conditions are almost too perfect for the raging Apple Fire."Fuel, weather, and topography - All three of those things come together in that part of the state," CAL FIRE San Diego Fire Captain, Issac Sanchez said. The Apple Fire is burning just north of the city of Beaumont in Riverside County. Sanchez says the flames are relentless, and crews on the ground need all the help they can get."Any agency, regardless of their size, cannot handle anything of this nature, in size and complexity," Sanchez said.Overnight, the fire erupted into the San Bernadino National Forest, which officially made it a federal incident. But multiple local crews from San Diego County are now at ground zero to help."It's not just a CAL FIRE show. It's not just a US Forest Service show," Sanchez said. "Everybody is on deck. Everybody is contributing. Everybody is engaged right now."Some of the local crews assisting in Riverside County include San Diego Fire-Rescue, Poway Fire Department, Coronado Fire Department, and the North County Fire District.Early Sunday afternoon, maintenance crews were doing final checks for CAL FIRE San Diego's air fleet, stationed at the Ramona Airport. These are valuable assets on stand-by to help attack the flames from above.ABC 10News learned that just before 3 pm Sunday, one of CAL FIRE San Diego's small tactical planes out of Ramona were dispatched for emergency assistance. It is now guiding large air tankers above the Apple Fire. But with so many local resources being taken out of the mix, many wonder if we are prepared if something like the Apple Fire erupts now in San Diego county."We never will give more than what we can afford to give," Sanchez answered.Sanchez says allocating resources is carefully calculated. Even if local crews are being good neighbors to assist others, crews here are still ready."We can still maintain an aggressive initial attack, and that is absolutely what we will do locally should any fire break out," Sanchez said.CAL FIRE reminds us that it is vital to be fire ready, especially during these dry, hot summers. 2568

CAMPO, Calif. (CNS) - A man suspected of setting fire to a historic commercial structure in downtown La Mesa during a police brutality protest that devolved into rioting last spring was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of arson and felony vandalism.Daniel Louis Sandoval, 43, was arrested Tuesday morning near his Campo home in connection with the fiery destruction of the Randall Lamb and Associates Building on Palm Avenue, according to the La Mesa Police Department. The structure, which had been designated as historically significant by the La Mesa Historical Society, was one of several buildings, including two banks, burned to the ground during the unrest. Two other men have been arrested in connection with the fires and the looting of stores during the chaotic demonstration. The May 30 protest was sparked by the Memorial Day in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the arrest of another Black man, Amaurie Johnson, in La Mesa a few days later.Johnson's rough arrest by a white La Mesa police officer was captured on video and proliferated over social media, prompting extensive backlash and a federal lawsuit filed by Johnson against the city. The demonstration began with protesters marching onto Interstate 8 in the afternoon, stopping traffic, before moving on to La Mesa police headquarters.Though the protest began peacefully, confrontations began breaking out at nightfall, with some demonstrators throwing things and officers firing beanbag rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowd.Sandoval was booked into San Diego Central Jail, where he was being held on 0,000 bail pending his initial court appearance. No arraignment date for the suspect was listed in jail records as of Tuesday evening. 1727

Cardinal George Pell is set for a tense wait for a decision over whether an abuse case against him will proceed to full criminal trial in Australia when the committal hearing against him wraps up this week. The Vatican treasurer is the most senior figure in the Holy See to ever face criminal charges, and the past three weeks of evidence has revealed details of multiple allegations of historical sexual abuse. The 76-year-old Cardinal, who stood aside from his senior post in Rome when he was charged in June last year, will not hear a final decision from the magistrate on whether the case will proceed to trial for up to two weeks, possibly longer. He has strenuously denied all charges. This week the remaining 50 witnesses will give testimony at Melbourne Magistrates Court where the case against Pell has been heard since early March. When the hearing closes Thursday, submissions will be made by both Pell's defense team and the prosecution for the magistrate to assess. 982

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Scientists are continuing to develop new COVID-19 testing methods. Everything from throat swabs and saliva tests to breathalyzers are potential options. The federal government has ordered 150 million rapid antigen tests to help quickly identify cases in places like schools and disaster zones.Still, we're six months into the global pandemic and experts say we still need better and more frequent testing.Supply chain bottlenecks, long turnaround times and the looming flu season have many pharmaceutical companies scrambling for a better test.“There's been a great push and a lot of innovation has gone into developing new tests that might be able to be used in different scenarios,” said Dr. Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist at University of Chicago Medicine.Abbott Laboratories’ sixth iteration of the COVID-19 test, known as “Binax Now,” is a compact credit card sized rapid test similar to a home pregnancy test.“You are receiving a nasal swab and then that swab is directly inserted into the card and there's a small pouch there that it's inserted into. Six drops of a buffer had been placed there prior to putting in the swab,” explained John Hackett, Junior Vice President of Applied Research and Technology at Abbott Laboratories. And though it does require a health care worker to administer, no specialty lab equipment is needed to process the antigen test. Results are available in about 15 minutes. The cost is apiece.“So, in 15 minutes you can look at the front of this test and if you see a single line, that would be the control line, and if there's two lines, that would indicate that the individual is positive for SARS-CoV-2,” said Hackett. The test was granted emergency use authorization by the FDA. It includes an app that allows people who test negative to display a temporary digital health pass for quick screening. The Trump administration quickly bought up 150 million tests for about 0 million.Officials say they are already beginning to deploy the tests to states, nursing homes, schools and areas hit hard by recent natural disasters.“These antigen tests however are fast and cheap, and it can be done really easily,” said Dr. Landon.Though, helpful in some scenarios, Landon cautions quick antigen tests like this can be less accurate and have a high false positive rate.“These tests aren't perfect and some of you have been in that situation with strep throat where you find that even if the test is negative that they send off a culture afterwards to make absolutely certain that you don't have strep throat and these tests are kind of similar,” she said.Still, experts say having a variety of testing options is beneficial. But the gold standard of accuracy remains the deep nasopharyngeal swab tests processed in a lab. 2796
