Patrick Quinn, a co-founder of the popular Ice Bucket Challenge, died at the age of 37.The ALS Association announced the news on social media Sunday.Quinn was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shortly after his 30th birthday, according to the association. Taking a cue from his friend, the late Pete Frates, Pat established his own team of supporters – Quinn for the Win – to raise awareness and funds for the fight against ALS.Pat, who lived in Yonkers, NY, saw the Ice Bucket Challenge on the social media feed of the friends and family of the late Anthony Senerchia, of Pelham, NY, and knew it was the key to raising ALS awareness. He and his Quinn for the Win supporters, along with Pete Frates and his Team Frate Train supporters, turned the challenge into the biggest social media phenomenon in history.The Ice Bucket Challenge went on to raise 5 million for The ALS Association and over 0 million around the world for ALS research. It dramatically accelerated the fight against ALS, leading to new research discoveries, expanded care for people living with ALS, and significant investment from the government in ALS research.In 2015, The ALS Association honored Pat, Pete, and Anthony as “ALS Heroes” at our annual Leadership Conference, an award given to people living with ALS who have had a significant positive impact on the fight against ALS. PEORIA, Ill. — Bradley University in central Illinois is requiring its entire student body to quarantine for two weeks because of clusters of COVID-19 on campus and is reverting to remote learning, officials announced Tuesday.Officials of the private university said they have linked a spike of the coronavirus to off-campus gatherings. The Peoria university is requiring students to limit nonessential interactions, stay in their off-campus apartments, residence halls and take classes remotely beginning Tuesday.The university said it has tallied about 50 COVID-19 cases so far, adding emergency measures are needed to respond to the outbreak without disrupting academic progress.“Although it may seem extreme, this move to temporary remote learning and a two-week, all-student quarantine allows us to focus on the continuity of the educational experience for all of our students while giving us time to gather data on the full extent of the spread of the virus and assess the best way to proceed as a community,” Bradley President Stephen Standifird said in a message to students.While about 4,600 undergraduates were enrolled at Bradley last year, it wasn’t immediately known how many are enrolled this fall. 1220

(KGTV) - A catamaran stuck in a Point Loma cave for nearly a week was pulverized by surf, according to the salvage crew.New photos and videos from Tow Boat US San Diego show unrecognizable pieces of fiberglass, and one hunk with the engine intact."There's no section left of the boat that looks like a boat at this point," Captain Tony Olson, with Tow Boat US San Diego, said.Last Friday morning two men on a fishing trip were rescued from a catamaran stuck inside a cave near the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant. The men fell asleep while the boat was set to autopilot.The surf was so rough since the crash, salvage crews couldn't re-enter the cave until Thursday afternoon. "It just completely pounds that thing, bouncing it off the walls like a pinball... trying to get behind it, next to it, in front of it, is a bad place to be," Olson said.The divers took pictures and were prepared to pump out fuel when they realized there was no fuel to be found, "there are no fuel tanks left to be found, they're gone. So in the process of the boat coming apart they have floated away, it did not smell like fuel inside the cave at all," he said.Three pieces of the boat came back with the crew, two hunks of fiberglass, "part of a hatch possibly," Olson said, and a steering wheel.Friday morning the crew will devise a plan to pick up the rest. "Float larger sections out possibly drag them off and hoist them up to a boat we'll have waiting out there," Olson said.The divers possibly swimming out the smaller debris. Laird officially became 'Mom' to the last of the crew, little Scotland, 11 months old."It's just very peaceful to know that no one is going to come and take her," said Laird.Scotland was the last of the five biological sisters to be formally adopted by Laird, though she went to live with Laird in January at just 12 days old. The adoption ceremony took place on Saturday, November 17 at Durango Juvenile Court Center as part of National Adoption Day. With food and entertainment, it was an all-out celebration in Phoenix, and a fun time for kids who have had a rough start in life.The pomp and circumstance may feel contradictory because the underlying issue is a national crisis. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are more than 400,000 kids in foster care across the country. PIKELOT ISLAND – Like out of a movie, three missing mariners were rescued from a deserted island in the Pacific after writing “SOS” in the sand.Authorities in the U.S. and Australia say the three men departed Puluwat Atoll on a 23-foot skiff last Thursday, intending to travel 21 nautical miles to Pulap, Chuuk.However, they never made it to their destination and were reported missing, according to the Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. A rescue mission was then launched.“Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam received notification of an overdue skiff last seen in the vicinity of Chuuk and requested our assistance,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Shaun McRoberts, 506th Air Expeditionary Aerial Refueling Squadron assistant director of operations. “Once notified, we began immediately working a plan to launch crews to locate the missing vessel.”After almost three hours into their mission and flying at about 1,500 feet, rescue crews located the mariners on the tiny, uninhabited island of Pikelot, Yap.“We were toward the end of our search pattern,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jason Palmeira-Yen. “We turned to avoid some rain showers and that’s when we looked down and saw an island, so we decide to check it out and that’s when we saw SOS and a boat right next to it on the beach. From there we called in the Australian Navy because they had two helicopters nearby that could assist and land on the island.”Early in the morning on Monday, authorities say a small boat crew was launched and rescued the mariners.The sailors told officials that they ran off course while traveling and eventually ran out of gas, according to the Australian Navy. 1643
