SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political party is accused of tricking some San Diego voters into joining them.San Diego Registrar of Voters' Michael Vu told 10News he has referred the matter to the District Attorney and the Secretary of State's Fraud Investigation Unit.The Common Sense Party was founded by former Republicans and is currently attempting to get the 67,000 signatures needed to appear on future ballots as an state-recognized political party. Others said they were given a voter registration form that did not include a place to indicate party preference. When KPBS obtained the form that had been filed by the signature party gatherer for one of the voters, she said she hadn't made any changes. "Oh, no. This is not something I recognize. That is not my handwriting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A homeless man was attacked with a skateboard while sleeping in North Park Saturday, San Diego Police said.The man was asleep in the south alley of El Cajon Blvd. at 28th St. when a man hit him repeatedly with a skateboard, said officers.The victim suffered serious head trauma and was taken to the hospital.Police said the attacker is white, about six feet tall, and between 19 and 26 years old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local musician is facing a painful COVID-19 toll, losing three family members and five friends to the virus.David Whitman's first loss to COVID-19 came in late April with the passing of Jeanne Fisher, his great-aunt."Went downhill fairly quickly and passed away at a nursing home in the Chicago area," said Whitman.In early June, his grandmother Beverly Whitman, 92, became sick at a nursing home in Wisconsin. She died June 13."I know the morphine they gave her. She really needed it. It was not an easy way to go," said Whitman.A few days before she passed, she was able to share a room with her husband of 69 years, Robert Whitman, 93, also diagnosed with coronavirus. He died three days after her death."His condition deteriorated pretty quickly I think after my grandmother passed away," said Whitman.Whitman's emotions are still raw."It's really tough not to be with family, not being able to get together to mourn," said Whitman.Whitman, a professional musician, is also grieving the death of five friends from the world of music. A few days ago, he released a recording of his award-winning song "I Have A Friend," which was inspired by his grandmother. It's a recording that helped him grieve."There is a healing aspect to sharing your humanity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new social media trend is hoping to help local food places hit hard by this COVID-19 pandemic.Currently, restaurants in the county are only allowed to serve food through take-out, delivery, or drive-thru service. Some restaurants have had to close altogether, not able to afford to keep their doors open. For those businesses trying to stay open, the community is lending its support through #takeoutchallenge.Sports Director Ben Higgins called it the easiest challenge in history. “All you have to do is go order take out from one of your local restaurants,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Republican candidate is finally in the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Thus far, the campaign to be the city's next leader has been dominated by Democrats, with no household Republicans stepping in.But earlier this month, Bay Park resident Richard Hansen re-registered from a decline-to-state to Republican in his own quest to succeed Republican Kevin Faulconer, who is termed out in 2020."I saw that there was a vacuum regarding the Republican Party putting up a candidate for mayor, and so I see a path to victory here in San Diego," Hansen said. Hansen, an ardent supporter of President Trump, is a former Democrat who left that party in 2016. He never re-registered with a party because he said he took issue with elitists in both the Democrat and Republican Parties. Hansen said, however, that he aligns with President Trump on issues such as the Second Amendment, the Border Wall, and abortion. "I just felt that Donald Trump, even though he is a billionaire, he's the blue collar billionaire," said Hansen, a real estate broker, who added he would serve the entire community as mayor. Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file nomination papers with the city of San Diego. The position is technically non-partisan. As it stands, Democrats outnumber Republicans in registration by a near two to one margin, 318,507 to 162,004. Additionally, there are more decline-to-state voters, 242,522, than Republicans in the city. "It's a blue city," said John Dadian, a political analyst. "We may have a super-duper majority on the City Council of Democrats, maybe more than exists right now, so it's just not feasible, quite honestly."A recent 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll found Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry in the race. Both are Democrats. It remains to be seen whether a household GOP candidate will emerge.
