SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of families of babies once cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch were reunited with their medical teams on Saturday.Sharp Mary Birch hosted its annual NICU Little Graduates Reunion at NTC Park at Liberty Station. The hospital holds the event each fall. The event is an opportunity for past NICU families to reunite with the doctors, nurses and team members who cared for them during their stay and celebrate their child’s health.Aldy and Alan Serrano went with their son, Xander. Xander weighed just 14 ounces when he was born in 2016. Xander spent nearly four months in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Besides seeing doctors and nurses, the Serrano's are thankful to be reunited with other families who also had children in the NICU during that time."When you're going through it, it's very difficult to explain to other people how you're feeling and whats actually happening. It's nice to have somebody to relate to," Aldy said.They have made relationships that will last a lifetime."We have several friends we met during our NICU stay that are now like family," Aldy said. "The challenges in the NICU don't stop in the NICU. As they grow up, there are so many other things that can happen that they can relate to."Xander is now an active happy and healthy toddler. He will be two at the end of the month.The reunion event also had a bounce house, bubble station, music, costumed Storm Troopers and games for all ages to enjoy. Sharp Mary Birch offers a full range of maternity, neonatal, and women’s surgical services, and delivers more than 9,000 babies annually. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Derek Swenningsen isn't the typical for trainer for puppies who go to become service animals but right now, volunteers like him are all Tender Loving Canines had. "We're making arrangements and trying to recruit new volunteers to take those puppies until volunteer programs inside prisons can pick back up again," said Victoria Cavaliere with TLC. TLC's 8-week-old puppies started out in prisons where inmates train them before they went to helping those in need. "We teach incarcerated individuals who are in the program how to train dogs to become service dogs using only positive reinforcement."But since COVID-19, they had to switch gears. "We’re looking for someone who is just passionate about the mission and has the time to open up their homes to having a puppy in their home," allowing those like Swenningsen to take their place as trainers."I feel obligated to do my best and make sure Fiji gets the best he can to make it through the program and help a fellow veteran out."Veterans and those who have disabilities or other medical conditions relied on service animals, putting TLC's dogs in demand, even amid a pandemic."To take a dog from a little puppy and mold it into what you want it to be which is this amazing superhero for someone with a disability and help give them independence and get them out of their homes and be part of the world."TLC partnered with Guide Dogs of America and has been in service for 20 years. Cavaliere said their program helped those with disabilities and medical conditions, and inmates as well."Individuals training these dogs are learning about the science of behavior and its helping them with their rehabilitation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Feeling overwhelmed by bills? 10News is exploring solutions for making it in San Diego and found there may be a way around the mountain of debt.A recent study by Lendedu suggests companies are open to allowing consumers to negotiate their bills. Using data provided by the company Truebill, Lendedu analyzed which companies tend to be more generous in negotiating with customers.Satellite service providers were analyzed in the report. Customers of SiriusXM had the highest success rate in negotiations, according to Lendedu. Consumers had negotiation success rates in the 80s with three other companies, Suddenlink, Centurylink, and Dish Network, the report showed.The study went on to note, “When it came to how much companies actually knocked off the average customer’s bill, SiriusXM once again led the way; the average SiriusXM customer was able to decrease that monthly charge by 40 percent or more. Immediately behind SiriusXM was CenturyLink, ADT Security, and DirectTV, who all fell into the 25 to 29 percent range in terms of the percentage the bill was decreased by post-negotiations.”RELATED: Making it in San Diego: How to deal with large medical bills"They're looking at who you are as a consumer," said Steven Osinski, a sales and direct marketing professor at San Diego State University. Osinski says the way businesses make their money, especially when it comes to services, is through recurring revenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Family Fun Center has returned to its roots in Kearny Mesa, reopening the Clairemont Mesa Blvd. location on Saturday.Following the closure of Boomers! last June after parent company Apex Parks Group filed for bankruptcy, the Huish family — who own the land — has revived the site under its original name.Shane Huish says his father built the original park at the site in 1974 and operated it for about 20 years before it was sold to Boomers! in the 1990s."With that happening, our family was excited to get them back. However, when we went back to the parks in June, we were floored," said Shane Huish.Huish says the former Boomers! was in need of several improvements and upgrades.Among those needed improvements, miniature golf, bumper boats, and an arcade all in need of a facelift.Saturday, the park reopened Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with mini-golf on its Storybook and Westernland courses and go-karting, featuring updated karts and track. Also returning, Bullwinkle’s Restaurant.Huish says the park's bumper boats will need to wait for state guidance since they are considered an amusement park attraction."We have been fixing up the miniature golf courses and that will continue ... we have completely gutted the arcade building and remodeled it," Huish said, adding that the arcade will also have to await state guidance to reopen.Huish says the future of the former El Cajon Boomers!, which is also owned by the family, depends on how the business landscape looks in the next four to six months due to the pandemic.For now, a dose of family fun in the outdoors has returned to the property."Our family is super excited to be back in San Diego, we all grew up there," Huish said.For hours and more information, head to Family Fun Centers' website here. 1794
