SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego residents have more access to public parks than other major California cities but parts of the county are falling behind, according to a study by the Equinox Project.78 percent of San Diegans live within a half-mile of a park in city limits, the study showed in an analysis of 2016 data. Overall, the city had almost 35 acres of park land per 1,000 residents.Mayor Faulconer credits proper budgeting as a reason for having so many parks in the city."Our neighborhood parks need to reflect that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man shot in an officer-involved shooting downtown last weekend has died from his injuries.Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra, 25, died of his injuries at the hospital on Monday just before 10:30 p.m., SDPD said Tuesday.On Saturday, two officers in the area of 1200 6th Avenue saw Ibarra leaving a building and recognized him from a recent wanted flier regarding a robbery, according to SDPD. Police say the officers attempted to stop and talk with Ibarra but he began to walk away.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoPolice say Ibarra dropped the items he was carrying and "reached into his waistband." He drew an object and pointed it at an officer, prompting both officers to fire their service weapons, police added."He produced a handgun and then pointed it at the officers," said SDPD Capt. Rich Freedman over the weekend. "For fear that they were going to be shot, the officers return fire."Ibarra was hit at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.A loaded revolver wrapped in a bandana was recovered at the scene, but police have not determined if Ibarra fired the weapon at officers.The two officers involved, identified as Jonathon Lucas and Tevar Zaki, were not injured. Both officers have been with SDPD for about four years, according to the department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police searched Tuesday for the man who may have groped several women in the South Bay.The most recent encounter happened Sunday at 7:30 p.m. as the woman was walking on Iris Ave. and Oro Vista Rd. in Nestor, police said.A man walking the opposite direction grabbed the woman’s breast, then ran away.The woman wasn’t hurt and told police the man didn’t appear to have a weapon.Police said the man was Hispanic, in his early 20’s, 5’6” tall with a heavy build. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, black athletic shorts, and black shoes.The man may be responsible for two similar attacks in the same area, said officers.The first incident happened October 30 at 7:30 pm. and the second was January 17 at 9:30 p.m., both on Oro Vista Rd. near the I-5 and 905 interchange.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scientists at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are working to replenish the California Halibut population.In October, they released 2,300 juvenile halibut into Mission Bay. Those fish were bred, born and raised at the institute. They hope it's just the start of a robust replenishment program."The species is pretty heavily depleted and for that reason, they're a good candidate to help boost the species," says Mark Drawbridge, the Institute's Director of the Sustainable Seafood Program.Recent surveys show the California Halibut is down to 14 percent of what its population should be. The most severe drop has come in Southern California.Hubbs hopes it can replicate the success it had with the White Seabass. It has released nearly 2.5 million seabass into the wild in the last 35 years."A lot of the process is transferable from one species to another," says Drawbridge.The Dick Laub Fisheries Replenishment Program oversees every step of the process, from breeding to release. Drawbridge says they've seen success in every phase so far."Our survival rates from egg to juvenile stage are typically 20 percent or higher," he says. "Compare that to the wild, where it would be a fraction of a percent. That's more than adequate to produce tens of thousands of fish."The next step is seeing how the halibut survive in the wild. The Institute put stainless steel trackers in each fish and will monitor them over the next few years.The program is funded through private donations, many of which come from fisherman who need a healthy halibut population to make a living. 1602
