DENVER, Colo. – Amanda Dufresne Lee is a sexual assault survivor. “I was on my daily run training for my first half marathon when I was attacked, beaten and attacked by a stranger,” Dufresne Lee said. It happened in August of 2003. She was a college student in Waco, Texas. While she was running, something hit her head from behind and she fell to the ground. “Then I turned to put my hand up thinking someone would help me up,” said Dufresne Lee. “And instead he picked me up by my throat.” Nearly two decades later, her memory of the traumatic experience unfortunately hasn’t faded. “I narrowly escaped with my life by rolling myself over a small cliff and running half-clothed to safety,” Dufresne Lee said. “I like to say that was the easy part, and everything following that was an absolute nightmare.” Dufresne Lee had PTSD so severe she became an insomniac, and it took her years to feel safe again. “I struggled to go to parking lots, because I felt like strangers were going to attack me,” Dufresne Lee said. However, she says there is part of her story she looks back on in a positive way. “I had two incredible nurses who were empathetic and warm and kind and patient who were there for me in absence of family or friends,” she said. Following her assault, Dufresne Lee was treated by a specific type of forensic nurse, known as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – SANE for short. “A lot of people don’t know what they’re allowed to receive, what they can receive, what they can ask for. That’s the best part about being a SANE nurse is giving my patients that choice and that right back. And letting them know what is available to them,” UCHealth SANE nurse Tammy Scarlett said. Tammy Scarlett has been a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for nearly five years. She currently works at UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She says she treats both men and women of all ages, but a majority of her patients are adult women. The exam varies depending on each situation. First, they address any medical concerns, and then they go through a history of what happened. Following that, the lengthy and intimate exam starts. “That’s where we check out any genitalia making sure there’s no injury. We can collect evidence, and we can do photo documentation as well,” Scarlett said. Dufresne Lee says the exam took even longer for her because her body kept going into shock, and she’d start violently shaking all over. "It’s incredibly invasive. Many women – myself included – describe it as being re-traumatized because they are combing through everything looking for evidence,” Dufresne Lee said. However, that evidence is necessary to find the offender and get justice. SANE nurses are able to provide one-on-one care. A Port St. Lucie man is recovering after he was bitten on the leg by an 8-foot alligator while walking his dog over the weekend, authorities said.According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Mark Johnson, 61, was attacked near a canal in a Port St. Lucie development around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday."I kind of slide and my foot is stuck in the mud, and the next thing I know, I see the lunge," Johnson said. "He starts clamping down pretty tight and he started to pull, and the next thing I do, I instantly, here's my fingers, I poke through the eye."Johnson said the gator was trying to drag him under the water, spinning while clamping down on the victim's leg."This gator was coming in fast. He was aggressive," Johnson said. "My foot was hanging out of the corner of his mouth."Johnson said that after he poked the gator in the eye, it let go of his leg and took off."I had to do something. That's what I say, you have seconds to react," Johnson said. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he received 62 stitches in his right left and was later released.Johnson said his dog Rex was not hurt. The FWC said an alligator trapper responded to the area of the attack and captured an 8-foot gator. The reptile was then relocated to an alligator farm.People with concerns about gators should call FWC's nuisance alligator hotline at 1-866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, Long Island's largest, has filed for bankruptcy, according to the diocese.Reverend John Barres, the bishop of Rockville Centre, announced the "difficult" news in a letter posted on the diocese's Twitter account Thursday.Barres said the diocese filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code earlier in the morning. The bishop said the decision comes after more than 200 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse were filed against the Diocese of Rockville Centre in the year since the passage of the Child Victims Act. Bishop Barres' Letter to the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre pic.twitter.com/0aGEat57vI— Diocese of Rockville Centre (@RVCDiocese) October 1, 2020 "What became clear is that the Diocese could not continue to carry out its spiritual, charitable and educational missions while also having to shoulder the increasingly heavy burden of litigation expenses associated with those cases," Barres wrote. The bishop said filing for bankruptcy was the only way to ensure a "fair and equitable outcome for everyone involved."According to Barres, most of the diocese's operations and ministries will continue without interruption during restructuring."We anticipate that current and future financial liquidity will be sufficient to fund normal operations and services," he wrote. He also assured that church employees would be paid their normal wages.Additionally, the letter said the work of the diocese's parishes and Catholic schools is expected to continue as normal, as they are not included in the Chapter 11 filing due to being separate legal entities. However, after filing for bankruptcy, the diocese will have fewer resources to help struggling schools and parishes."For the Diocese, fair and equitable treatment for survivors of sexual abuse has always been a top priority," Barres wrote. "That is why we created the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program in 2017."The reverend said that program has helped approximately 350 survivors of sexual abuse so far, but has also depleted the diocese's financial resources."We will work diligently with all survivors, creditors and ministries to maintain open communication while we work toward our goal of completing a settlement and a restructuring plan that includes a comprehensive resolution for those suffering survivors," the bishop wrote. BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes. The hotel is seeing an added benefit, too. “A lot of people stay at this hotel because of this program,” Johnston said. “And a lot of people spread the love.” Puppy love, that is.In addition to the hotel in Biloxi, another hotel in Mississippi has also started a similar dog adoption program. 1751
