You see the spellers on the stage at Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there’s a critical player in the competition who you hear more than see.Dr. Jacques Bailly is the Bee’s official pronouncer, and to the spellers, he’s a celebrity. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through.He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. Because it's amazing how that helps.”He believes competing in the National Spelling Bee opens doors for spellers to worlds they’ve never seen before at a critical age.“Doors to chemistry, doors to concert instruments, doors to culture of any sort,” he says. “It's the words that describe our world.”Dr. Bailly finds satisfaction in spelling, as well as sharing his passion with the next generation.“I just love doing this,” he says. 1542

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people were seriously injured and a third person is dead after a shooting in a Chula Vista Costco parking lot Monday afternoon, according to police. The incident happened about 12:30 p.m. near the Costco at 1100 Broadway at Naples St. Other nearby stores include Walmart and Petco. Chula Vista police said a woman and her new boyfriend were putting away groceries in their car in the parking lot when the suspect approached from behind, shot both victims several times before turning the gun on himself. “I was about to pull in to the parking lot, a parking space; I thought they were fighting or something," said Carlos, a witness who did not provide his last name.Chris Anthes, who witnessed the incident unfold, told 10News, “The woman was up, like she was holding her chest. I thought maybe she was having a heart attack or something like that.” Anthes’ sister-in-law, Angela Shelton, added, “This other guy comes up and grabs ahold of her. Now that I know what was going on, he was trying to shield her.”Responding officers found the three victims suffering gunshot wounds, according to Lt. Dan Peak of the Chula Vista Police Department. All three were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with serious injuries. The suspected shooter was pronounced dead at the hospital, and police said the victims underwent surgeryThe woman’s newborn child, who was in a stroller nearby at the time of the shooting, was uninjured in the incident. Peak said at a Monday afternoon news conference that investigators believe the suspected shooter is either the ex-boyfriend or an acquaintance of the female victim. "We can tell you is that we believe the scene is safe; we believe there is no danger to the public," said Peak. A witness at a Panda Express across from the Costco parking lot said she didn’t see the shooting, but saw police cars swarm the area. Businesses in the area, including Costco, remain open. Police say they recovered a handgun at the scene. There are no outstanding suspects, according to officers.Shelton said she noticed something peculiar about the gun.“It was definitely altered in some way. (AP) -- Family members of nine women and children from an offshoot Mormon community who were killed in Mexico in November have filed a federal lawsuit against the Juarez drug cartel.They accuse the cartel of carrying out the attack in retribution for publicly criticizing and demonstrating against the cartel.A lawyer representing the family members said they initiated the lawsuit to show the Juarez cartel was responsible for the Nov. 4 slaughter and to seek damages.It's not clear whether representatives of the cartel would appear in court to defend against the lawsuit. 582

The outage was brief and service has been restored.The culprit was a configuration issue from Level 3, a telecommunications and internet service provider owned by CenturyLink. In a statement to CNN Tech, CenturyLink said a "configuration error" disrupted service and technicians restored service in 90 minutes.CenturyLink declined to provide further details.Though Level 3 was responsible for the issue, it affected other internet providers like Comcast. That's because Level 3's infrastructure delivers content for other internet services.Comcast said the service disruption to its Xfinity internet service has been resolved.According to reports from Down Detector, a website that monitors internet outages, Comcast and Level 3 connectivity was impacted nationwide beginning around 10 a.m. Pacific.Other internet service providers including Spectrum, Verizon, and AT&T showed a spike in connectivity issues, too, though they were not as widespread. (AT&T has agreed to acquire CNN's parent company Time Warner, and the deal is pending regulatory approval.) It's unclear if the spikes were related to the Level 3 outage.The website does not provide numbers of people affected.Following public complaints of widespread outages, rumors temporarily circulated online that the outage was a coordinated hack of some sort.
