CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Caltrans has begun installing spikes along the Coronado Bridge, designed to deter suicide jumpers. “It’s more of a psychological deterrent than anything else,” says Rhonda Haiston, the founder of the Coronado San Diego Bridge Collaborative for Suicide Prevention. Her group has campaigned to get barriers installed on the bridge.The four-inch spikes may not serve as a physical barrier, but they may slow people down she says. “If we can just give them a little extra effort they have to go through, we can stop them, talk to them,” says Haiston. Caltrans said the project had an estimated cost of 0,000 to 0,000. The spikes will be placed along both sides of the bridge across the 2.1 mile span. The project will take several nights, with lane closures beginning at 8 p.m.Meanwhile, Caltrans says it is still researching other long term solutions that could consist of fences, heightened barriers, glass panels or nets. Conditions on a breeder's property during an animal rescue operation near Nashville were so toxic that the leader of the rescue team nearly died from ammonia poisoning.Scotlund Haisley, the founder of Animal Rescue Corps, led a team along with sheriff's deputies to the home of a breeder. It was called Operation Noah's Ark.They rescued 150 animals from horrible conditions - conditions that were so bad, Haisley was poisoned by fumes and needed a blood transfusion to survive.Haisley wasn't feeling well, but he was still up and around two days later giving a tour of the shelter."This is what it takes to care for 150 animals. All of these volunteers," said Haisley pointing to his team.Moments later, he became violently sick.ARC has made hundreds of rescues over the years, almost all of them are in deplorable conditions.Yet, this one was in many ways the worst and most dangerous. Inside the structures, Haisley found an unbelievable amount of feces and urine, which produced the highest ammonia levels he'd ever encountered. He still went in."The animals were in there. They were suffering greatly. We had to get them out," said Haisley.Free from that toxic environment, the animals immediately began getting better, but Haisley got worse."Extreme nausea, couldn't hold food or beverages down and very exhausted," Haisley said describing his symptoms.Haisley talked to us later by phone after his release from the hospital for what turned out to be acute ammonia poisoning which required a massive blood transfusion. Doctors told him he nearly died."I've experienced ammonia before. This is a whole new experience for me," said Haisley.However, it won't change his mission. The experience made Haisley even more determined to rescue animals.He now knows, more than ever, that no living creature should ever live in such conditions.Experts say the toxic fumes found at some deplorable sites where animals are rescued can be comparable with those found at a meth lab.Haisley says crews often will wear oxygen masks, but now for extreme cases, they are looking to buy some protective full-body suits. 2187

The hub for ear piercings at malls across America is the latest retailer to succumb to its massive pile of debt.Claire's, which says it has pierced more than 100 million ears around the world, reached a restructuring agreement with its creditors. In a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on Monday, Claire's said it will reduce its by debt .9 billion. It held .1 billion in debt at the end of 2017.The company will continue to operate its approximately 1,600 Claire's and Icing brand stores in the United States during the bankruptcy process and expects to complete it by September. International stores are not part of the restructuring agreement."This transaction substantially reduces the debt on our balance sheet," Claire's CEO Ron Marshall said in a statement. "We will complete this process as a healthier, more profitable company." Marshall came from now-defunct bookstore chain Borders. Claire's struggles stem from a deal it struck more than a decade ago that left it burdened with debt.In 2007, Apollo Management, a private equity firm, bought Claire's for .1 billion and took the company private in what's known as a leveraged buyout.Claire's could never escape its debt load. Complaints are growing nationwide about workplace safety issues related to coronavirus. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, has received more than 6,500 nationwide on a federal level since February.One trial lawyer who works in employment law says she expects the number of complains will keep going up.“Where I really think the numbers are going to escalate is in the retaliation world, where employees bring issues to their employers' attention about failing to implement appropriate administrative or engineering controls or social distancing measures and then they feel that they have suffered an adverse employment action as a result of bringing this to their employer's attention,” said trial lawyer Laura Lawless.OSHA recently updated its guidance on COVID-19-related workplace safety. It now suggests wherever possible and feasible employers should require masks at work.This guidance is something Lawless says everyone was waiting on. She says for states or cities that already had a mask mandate it was easier to enforce at work already, but for states that don't have this mandate, it was harder until now.“At least you can now turn to CDC guidance and OSHA guidance as an employer and say look even if you disagree with us for a political reason or personal expression reason, we're following the guidance from agencies that are meant to look out for your health and safety,” said Lawless.Still, there are concerns OSHA isn't going far enough in other areas.
