BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun urged promoting innovation, communication and the influence of Chinese culture with advanced technology on Monday.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during his visit to the Beijing International Radio, TV and Film Equipment Exhibition (BIRTV).Li also called for efforts to better integrate culture and technology.Li reviewed some new achievements of communication technology innovation on display. He urged businesses to strengthen independent technological innovations to adapt China's Radio and TV communications technology to the digital and internet age.Also, improved integrity of culture and technology would help to promote the competitiveness of Chinese culture and enterprises in the cultural sector should promote the technical element in their products with improved equipment and proprietary intellectual property rights of key technologies, Li said.Further, advanced technology should be employed to promote both the emerging cultural sector and traditional sector, Li said.The BIRTV exhibition is sponsored by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. About 400 exhibitors attended the exhibition with equipments for radio, TV and film productions, broadcasting, transmitting and projecting on display.

ZURICH, Switzerland, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Doris Leuthard, president of the Swiss Confederation, held talks on Sunday and agreed to expand their bilateral cooperation.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), delivered Chinese President Hu Jintao's regards to Leuthard. He said China will work together with Switzerland to push forward the Sino-Swiss ties.The Chinese and Swiss economies are highly complementary and have large potential in economic cooperation, said Wu. China expects to make joint efforts with Switzerland to strengthen cooperation in such areas as financial service, environmental protection, green economy and low-carbon technology while deepening cooperation in traditional fields, he said.Leuthard highly commended the progress in Sino-Swiss relations in recent years.She said Switzerland, which is one of the earliest western countries to establish diplomatic ties with China, gives great attention to a friendly cooperation with China and is willing to deepen the bilateral ties. BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged members and officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to emulate the achievements of an official who died on duty after six years of dedicated work as a village Party secretary.Xi made the statement in Beijing while meeting with attendants to a ceremony to mark the release of a movie about the Party secretary's life in the village, and that of a book based on his diaries.The official, Shen Hao, had been a provincial government official in Anhui in central China, but was later assigned as a village Party secretary in 2004.Shen's devotion to his job brought about significant changes in the village and twice his term was extended at the request of the people in the village, though the work eventually cost him his life. He fell ill through constant overwork and died on November 6, 2009.Xi hailed Shen as a role model for CPC members and officials and urged them to maintain close ties with the people.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Eight miners trapped for 35 hours in a flooded colliery in north China's Shanxi Province were saved early Friday, rescuers said. One miner is still missing.The eight survivors were taken to hospital for treatment. They are in stable conditions, said Li Youcai, deputy chief of Shengping Coal Mine Workers' Hospital in Taitou Town.They are expected to recover and be discharged from hospital in one week, Li said.The first four survivors were rescued and sent to hospital at around 2:30 a.m.; the other four miners were helped out of the pit at around 4:10 a.m., rescuers saidThe eight survivors were known to be alive and had been in close contact with the rescuers via phone after the Shengping Coal Mine in Jixian County where they worked was flooded with torrential rain water Wednesday.The accident happened at around 5 p.m. when 23 miners were performing repair work underground. Fourteen miners managed to escape.Rescuers were still trying to find out the whereabouts of the last missing miner, who lost contact with the others after the flood.The Shengping Coal Mine, owned by the Shanxi Coal Transportation and Sales Group Co., Ltd., has an annual output of 900,000 tonnes.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.
