BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) - A City of Chula Vista spokesman said the city does not have any immediate plans to redevelop the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course despite a report that showed roughly 2,700 homes built on the Bonita-area course.“For anybody to want to take it away, it’s hurtful,” exclaimed Bonita resident Xochitl Rouston.A report called “Redevelopment of the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course” was shared on a Bonita Facebook group by a member who found the report online. The report outlines options to redevelop the area currently occupied by the course and parts of Rohr Park, which is in Chula Vista but borders Bonita.“Where are we going to take the kids?  Where are we going to go walking?  Where are we going to have our parties?” questioned Rouston who has lived in Bonita for more than 40 years.A Chula Vista spokesman told 10News the city completed a study in 2015 that said revenue at the course was declining and it wasn’t generating enough revenue to refurbish the course.  The report in question was issued so the city could “know what our options are should the golf course not be able to generate a return and pay for itself.” The spokesman emphasized the city is in the very early stages and there is no timeline for any projects.“We’re just trying to raise awareness, get everybody together,” said Rouston, who said they were surprised to learn any redevelopment was being considered.The Chula Vista spokesman said the Bonita residents would be notified of any discussions or meetings pertaining to the golf course or Rohr Park. 1594

BALTIMORE, Md. - "I never thought that I would be on Facebook again, and going on Facebook is literally what changed my life."It was a lifesaving change for Rachel Rockwell.Her old classmate Kate Corzine would be her agent of change.“After having this condition for 12 years and knowing that I eventually needed to look for a liver donor, the time had come.”Rachel opened up on Facebook about her autoimmune disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. I'd like to offer my help and after hearing a bit more he said, go for it."There was an outpouring of support for Rachel on social media. More than 50 people responded, but Kate ended up being the perfect match.They met for lunch two weeks prior to their Sept. 29 surgery date in the middle of a pandemic."It has been a challenging year for a lot of people and to have this hope that is shared and the joy that comes from it, it's pretty amazing."There's a lot of darkness and for people to see an opportunity for light and then see that happen so abundantly with Kate is very moving."While Rachel's grateful for Kate, both women are grateful for the medical team at Johns Hopkins that made it happen.Their surgeon, Dr. Andrew Cameron says the amazing story of Kate's willingness to share more than half of her liver with a former classmate.... is a testament to the importance of transplants.Their road to recovery is smooth so far.....Kate's liver is regenerating....and Rachel is on the mend with her PSC thanks to her new organ.“I'm on a lot of medication to keep the liver happy, Kate's liver happy, but a year from now it'll probably seem like my liver."While the two shared sisterhood at Bryn Mawr graduating from the girls' school in 1997. BANGOR, Me. — It’s the time of year to bundle up, pick out a tree, and make time for tradition.Despite everything this year has brought, there are moments worth celebrating, and in some places, life almost seems normal.“Everything has been canceled or changed, or you can't do this, you can't do this that, and the nice thing about our trees here is they're planted at 6 feet apart, coincidentally,” said Mac McCullen, owner of the Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm.The Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm didn’t plan for a pandemic, but they’re hoping families can find a small escape when they visit.“People could spread out, find their trees, stay safe and enjoy that kind of time together with their family, which is so important, I think, and particularly in a time like this,” McCullen said.After retiring from the Navy, McCullen and his wife took over the farm. “Our favorite part of being on the farm is, quite honestly, just being outside," he said.It’s a joy the McCullens were terrified of losing because of Covid-19.“We weren't sure that people were gonna show up. We were very pleased our first weekend to have probably better than normal weekend. And it's kind of continued to be that way. Even our weekdays, which are typically pretty slow, two or three people here and there, have been fairly steady,” said McCullen.They did everything they could to make their farm safe: putting up sneeze guards and using social distancing in their store.The couple was thankful to see the cars fill their parking lot.“This is one of the best things we come to do, to stay together,” said long-time customer Mike Cassidy.“I haven’t been to get a tree anywhere else since I’ve been born,” said Cassidy’s daughter, Mariah.These simple moments of family fun are making sure the McCullen’s legacy can live on.“It's a huge relief because not only do we have to deal with COVID, but we're a seasonal business. People don't buy Christmas trees year-round, so all of our sales happen in the month of November and December. So, if people didn't show up, oh my gosh, you know, we really would have a hard time surviving," McCullen said.It’s not just at this farm, demand for Christmas trees is skyrocketing across the country, so much so, that some farms are seeing shortages.With that jump in demand, comes a jump in price. The National Christmas Tree Association reported Americans will pay an average of 7 percent more for a tree this year than last year, and 23 percent more than they paid in 2018.But raising prices wasn’t an option at this farm.“With all the difficulties that everybody has gone through and the stress and the strain that is put on everyone, we just didn't want to add another layer to that. So, what we tried to do was stay as consistent as we could to keep our prices the same so that people could come out and know what to expect when they get here,” said McCullen.McCullen and his wife made many of the wreaths themselves. They also made candle holders from fresh fir trees and garland for your home.“I get a little emotional about it because it's just us. For my wife and I, we don't have children, so our workers the people that are here with us that support us are our family. That's what the emotional piece of it just being able to be, you know, in something together and to be able to create, you know, things that we know people enjoy,” said McCullen.For those close enough to visit, taking home a Piper Mountain tree is a tradition they won’t miss.“We love a real Christmas tree,” said Mariah Cassidy. “There’s nothing like it, and coming here always feels like home.”“And this year would be in memory of my mom, Gaila,” said Matthew Cassidy. “She used to love to come here, and she’s the main reason we keep coming here. We lost her about 3 years ago, and it’s the only way to keep her with us because Christmas was her favorite time of year.”And for more families than ever, this reminder of happiness, no matter how big or small, is one way to bring the joy of Christmas past into the present. 4102

Beyond the beaches of the world, lies the potential for oceans of energy."I'm very excited about this because it's a very renewable energy-based technology,” said Professor Bruce Logan of Penn State University.Logan and university researchers recently created a device that removes salt from seawater in a cheaper way, allowing that water to then be used to create a renewable form of hydrogen fuel.“There's a lot of interest in renewable hydrogen,” Logan said. “Most of the hydrogen made today is made from fossil fuels, and so, we're interested in making that hydrogen from water.”That involves splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The problem? Seawater also has salt, which needs to be removed first and that’s expensive to do.However, the “seawater electrolyzer” that Logan and his team worked on takes care of that issue cheaply by using a special membrane and without requiring expensive desalination plants. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Energy and Environmental Science.“Hydrogen is a great fuel,” he said. “It's been examined as a fuel for many decades now.”About 97 percent of all the water on earth is in the ocean, which means if it could be used efficiently to make hydrogen fuel, it could be a game-changer.“As we look to de-carbonize our fossil fuel infrastructure, we also can use it primarily for heavy-duty vehicles,” Logan said. “Airbus is looking to actually make airplanes that fly on hydrogen.”For now, though, their device would need to be scaled-up to a much larger version.“There are many nations and companies and nations across the world looking to do this. One of the biggest proposed hydrogen plants is in Saudi Arabia -- billion,” Logan said. “I would hope to convince them that it might be cheaper and better to use seawater directly, you know, in a system like this.”It’s a possibility that might one day create a bridge between our energy needs on land and the power in the sea. 1962
