We’re getting a clearer picture of housing inequalities minority families are facing.Two economists analyzed more than a decade of tax assessment and sales information for nearly 120 million homes across the country. They focused on areas where every homeowner theoretically faces the same tax rate.What they found was that minority homeowners still ended up paying a ten to 13 percent higher tax rate on average. For the median Black or Hispanic household, that could be an extra to 0 a year.They also looked at property tax appeals in Chicago, and found Black homeowners were significantly less likely to appeal their property tax assessment. This kind of data is not available nationwide, but it is believed to be a widespread issue.“So much of it is rooted in systemic and historical structures of racism. So, you know, if you’re white and middle class in this country and you feel like your property tax bill is off in a way that doesn’t benefit you, your experience with government has probably been ‘oh, if I appeal or either that there's probably a process by which i can go get that wrong righted and i'll be given a fair shake at that,’” said Chris Hoene, with the California Budget and Policy Center.Hoene said Black Americans overall have had a far different experience with government, and the idea a Black homeowner would go and appeal and be treated fairly is not something they would consider.Hoene suggests creating systems that are less dependent on showing up in person to make their case, possibly allow appeals through an online system.The economists who looked at the nationwide data suggest assessors to look at zip code level home price indexes to reduce overtaxation. They said doing that could reduce the total inequality in property tax assessments up to 70 percent. 1807

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Unlike in many parts of the world, Election Day in America isn’t a day most people get off from work or school, and it’s not for a lack of trying in the past.“There've been several efforts to make it a holiday, at least for the five previous Congresses, including this one,” said Matthew Weil, who runs The Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center.Those proposed bills to make Election Day a federal holiday have gone nowhere though.Coincidentally, America also has one of the lowest voter participation rates in the developed world, which was about 56 percent in 2016.Over the years, though, some states have made it a state or civic holiday, most recently this year in Illinois and Virginia. In California, state law requires employers to give employees at least two paid hours to vote on Election Day. However, that’s not the case in most places.Weil said whether or not employers need to give you time to vote on Election Day, varies state by state.“In states that don't have robust voting by mail options, or early voting options, Election Day being the only option isn't good,” Weil said. “The good news is the trend has been toward expanding options over the past 10 years.”Those options include early voting, which millions of voters have already done in the 2020 election, including Kevin Jackson in Ohio.“Don’t just wait. Plan your vote,” Jackson said. “Get down here and get it done.”The key to moving forward, experts say, is for all states to offer as many opportunities to vote as possible. Those changes could spread even more now because of the coronavirus pandemic.“I think it's got to be something that we're just not going back to how we used to vote,” said Weil. “I think that this will accelerate changes going forward.”Recently, some high-profile employers like Coca-Cola and Twitter, as well as universities like Brown and American, have decided to give Election Day off to their employees and students, not just so they can vote, but to also encourage them to volunteer as poll workers. 2046

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two different doses of a thyroid medication are being recalled because they're not potent enough.The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that Acella Pharmaceuticals is voluntarily recalling one lot of 15-milligram and one lot of 120-milligram NP Thyroid?, Thyroid Tablets.The products may have as low as 87% of the labeled amount of levothyroxine, which is used to treat hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), according to the FDA.The company’s risk statement says patients being treated for hypothyroidism who receive sub potent NP Thyroid may experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, including fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, puffy face, hair loss, slow heart rate, depression, swelling of the thyroid gland and/or unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight.“There is reasonable risk of serious injury in newborn infants or pregnant women with hypothyroidism including early miscarriage, fetal hyperthyroidism, and/or impairments to fetal neural and skeletal development,” wrote Acella. “In elderly patients and patients with underlying cardiac disease toxic cardiac manifestations of hyperthyroidism may occur, such as cardiac pain, palpitations or cardiac arrhythmia.”So far, Acella says it has received four reports of "adverse events" for these lot numbers, possibly related to the recall.The products subject to recall are packed in 100-count bottles. Their lot numbers are M327E19-1 and M328F19-3. Wasping is not a new and improved way to get rid of those pesky insects; it's a dangerous new drug trend, and it's causing concerns in Summit County, Ohio after three cases were reported in just one week.Inspector Bill Holland said the white foam spray used to eliminate wasps and hornets is being cut with meth by some drug users for a combination high."Some are spraying it on the meth. Some are spraying it in a manner where they can heat it up and then crystalize it, and then once it's crystallized, they can heat it up again and shoot it into their veins," Holland said.In three different cases over the last week, two men and a woman who appeared to be high were arrested.Once inside the Summit County Jail, they began experiencing hallucinations.Holland said the woman became flushed and agitated, and her vitals were off."Her body started to contort. It almost looked like if you spray a wasp, how they can kind of shrivel up and their body kind of cinches up," Holland said. "That's kind of how she looked."The woman, and one of the male inmates, were taken to a hospital for treatment, then returned to the jail."Once it's all over, they have no recollection of what happened," Holland said.Dr. Garry Thrasher with Oriana House said smoking or injecting the insecticide in combination with meth is very dangerous."Methamphetamines by themselves can cause psychotic behaviors, sometimes paranoia and even violence, and combining it with another substance that's abused is very problematic," Dr. Thrasher said.Both Holland and Thrasher have read about similar cases in the U.S., but the incidents documented at the jail were the first cases they've heard about locally.Dr. Thrasher urged people not to take a chance with the drug combo and stressed there are many treatment facility options for those struggling with addiction or abuse.Holland worries that others will make the foolish decision to try wasping, so he's sending out a warning about the severity of this new practice."It can be deadly for people and we don't want that to happen, but we do want to make people aware of what's going on out there," Holland said.  2212
