SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students and staff at the King-Chavez Community High School Freshman academy have had a tumultuous few months.  They were displaced from their classrooms location at 1010 Second Avenue in downtown.The building closed down earlier this year for asbestos treatment, displacing many tenants including the school.RELATED: 550 San Diego city workers relocated due to asbestos“It’s been a nightmare,” Principal Kevin Bradshaw said, saying it was a very abrupt closure. “We left school on a Friday evening, came back on a Monday morning and we were locked out," he said.In a statement, the building manager said this to 10News: “We sent an email notice to all tenants immediately following notification from the regulatory agency."Bradshaw says they were not given time to move their things out of the classroom, in fact, they weren’t even allowed to retrieve their equipment. “We have televisions, computers, student’s work, teacher’s items, anything you would have in any normal campus is still in the building,” Bradshaw said. He says they’ve had to replace all those things in order to continue the education of students. The school also had to move their classes to the Boys and Girls Club in Clairemont. Bradshaw says that means they've had to bus their students to that location every day for more than two months, and the bills are racking up.He’s hoping they will be reimbursed.“The owner and all parties involved are actively evaluating the expenses associated with the shutdown,” building management told 10News in a statement. They went on to say that “the building has undergone extensive testing in accordance with the regulatory requirements for occupancy,” and is completely safe now.Bradshaw says he’s still not ready to bring students back to the building until he’s sure it’s safe and they won’t be displaced again. 1889

Gavin Newsom sign a bill that would require high school students across California to take an ethnic studies class to graduate."My parents are both first-generation immigrants, they came from Hunan, which is where all the spicy food from China is from," Alvin Lee, 17, said chuckling.Lee is a first-generation American and as a high school senior, sees flaws in our education system."Christopher Columbus is the savior, right all these white figures are the saviors but they don't talk about what Asian Americans, African Americans, what Hispanic Americans and Native Americans did to build America," Lee said emphatically. "We don't learn about this lived history and I think it's very destructive. I think it almost erases some of our identity."Lee said it also leaves minorities feeling powerless. He is a co-founder of GENup, a youth organization committed to changing our nation's schools by giving students more of a voice in their education.That is why he supports AB 331."AB 331 would ease in eventual graduation requirement for high-schoolers in California that they take an ethnic studies course. Now it will be localized, it will be up to the school district and up to the individual schools about what that course looks like," Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-80, said.Gonzalez said this gives each public and charter school the opportunity to tailor the class to their students. "When you have 70% of the population are Latino and probably about 90% of schoolchildren are Latino, Mexican immigrants, in particular Mexican American and Mexican immigrants. Well, it might make sense to teach about Mexican American history in California," said Gonzalez, who co-authored AB 331. She says she's been pushing to get the issue to the governor's desk for 18 years."Having that validation and being able to learn about the historical context of different race and ethnic roots in California is really essential and we think the outcomes will actually show that kids are going to be less likely to drop out, they're going to be more likely to graduate and they're going to do better in school," she said.Lee hopes the bill is passed and creates more empathy and compassion."I really want to see a much more inter-sectionalized community where we all really understand each other's cultures, histories, and identities much better," said Lee.Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bill. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sirhan Sirhan, who was convicted for assassinating Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, was stabbed Friday in a South San Diego County prison. A statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the stabbing occurred Friday afternoon at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego."Officers responded quickly, and found an inmate with stab wound injuries. He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition," the statement said.The statement did not name Sirhan, but TMZ first reported that Sirhan was stabbed and taken to a hospital outside the prison for care. The Associated Press, citing a government source, confirmed that Sirhan was the victim.Cal Fire confirmed to 10News a person stabbed Friday afternoon at the prison was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital."The suspect in the attack has been identified, and has placed in the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit, pending an investigation," a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation official said in a statement.Sirhan was convicted in the shooting death of Kennedy during a presidential campaign rally in Los Angeles. He was immediately tackled by witnesses. Sirhan was convicted of first-degree murder in 1969 and initially sentenced to death. The sentenced was commuted to life in prison in 1972 when the California Supreme Court found that the death penalty constituted cruel and unusual punishment under the state constitution, according to the CDCR.Sirhan has had 15 parole hearings and subsequent denials since he was incarcerated. He has claimed he does not remember shooting Kennedy, the Associated Press reported in 2016.At least five inmates were injured during a riot at Donovan prison one week ago. The fight broke out in the prison yard among inmates, some of whom used handmade weapons. The five injured men were taken to local hospitals for treatment.The CDCR reported 4,093 prisoners living at Donovan prison as of Aug. 28. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released Thursday the name of a man who was shot and died after reportedly breaking in to a San Carlos home. Hollis Forman, 38, entered the home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive July 16 and began fighting with the 54-year-old homeowner, police said. The homeowner’s wife called 911 as her husband confronted the man. Police said the homeowner’s 20-year-old son grabbed a gun and shot Forman, who ran out the back door and fell into the pool.
