SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Springtime in San Diego. The sun's out, the temperature is just right, and crane flies are buzzing. Those mosquito-looking bugs that bounce around like bumper cars can be seen around town even more this season, after one of the wettest winters San Diego has seen in some time.Crane flies, routinely called "mosquito hawks" and "skeeter eaters," frequent San Diego throughout the year, but are especially active in the spring during breeding.RELATED:How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest CityDoes more rain mean more mosquitoes? No, but San Diego may get 'buggy' this springAnd with a rainy winter comes the likelihood of even more, according to Chris Conlan, San Diego County's supervising vector ecologist."We’ve already had people calling us (Vector Control) about them," Conlan said. "They think they’re big mosquitoes."But they're not. And a couple of the assumptions about the insect also need some clearing up.They aren't mosquitoesCrane flies are harmless to humans, Conlan says. Both crane flies are part of the order Diptera, or "flies," but mosquitoes are a part of family Culicidae. Crane flies are part of the family Tipulidae. And because they're usually caught buzzing around porch lights quickly or around a home even, residents may get scared upon seeing them.“They’re very attracted to lights, so if you have any around openings to your home, it’s very easy for them to get accidentally swept into the house,” Conlan said. “And then they end up freaking you and the cat out!”While they are big for bugs, reaching up to an inch or more in length, their pole-like legs can make them appear even larger. But there's a rule of thumb Conlan advises residents follow: If it looks bigger than a dime, it's too big to be a mosquito. They don't eat mosquitoesAnother big misconception, brought on by their nicknames, is that they eat mosquitoes.Crane flies don't suck blood — most adult flies actually don't eat eat all. If they do eat, they drink nectar. The bug doesn't bite and can't transmit any diseases. And their larvae generally feed off decaying organic matter while living in wet soil.In fact, they're more likely to be eaten by birds, lizards, and other creatures. Adult crane flies typically won't live past 10 days, according to Conlan.County News Center contributed to this report. 2350

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets. The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. It's located about 3340 light-years away in the direction of constellation Cygnus. 1748

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - South Bay summer fun kicks off Memorial Day weekend, this season with an energy-efficient edge.SeaWorld's Aquatica waterpark will welcome thrill seekers and beach bums back to the park for the season on May 25, with attractions such as the Big Surf Shores wave pool, the Loggerhead Lane lazy river, and Tassie's Twister slide. This season's action will also harness the power of the sun with the park's new solar panel system. Park officials say the 3,780-panel installation will generate 80 to 90 percent of the park's annual energy use.MORE: Family fun happening around San DiegoThe panels will also provide more than 400 shaded parking spots for guests and employees. The park is open daily May 25 to Sept. 3 and weekends only from Sept. 8 to Oct. 7. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego will begin building its alternative to San Diego Gas & Electric, which it says could lower bills by about 5 percent. The City Council voted 7-2 Monday to begin creating what's called a Community Choice Aggregator -- an energy company that would help the city reach its goal of reaching 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. San Diego will begin approaching approaching other cities in this county, and Orange County, to create a region-wide provider. The idea is the more cities involved, the more negotiating power the city will have to buy energy to sell to residents. "Community Choice Aggregators can and will save money, but the people will bear the real consequences and reap the benefits of the decisions you're making are their children and grandchildren," John Atcheson, a Rancho Bernardo resident, told the council Monday. In a statement, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said this would give San Diegans a choice when it comes to how they get their power. "For decades San Diegans have only had one option on where they get their electricity," Faulconer said. "Community Choice will change that by injecting healthy competition into the marketplace, allowing customers to benefit from lower energy costs, and pick greener energy sources to power their home or business."The move is not without risks. Councilman Scott Sherman voted against the plan, noting the city's recent trouble with its existing utility, the water department. The department is undergoing major transformation after an audit found thousands were billed incorrectly. Plus, start-up costs could be as much as million, and residents would have to pay exit fees to SDG&E. A spokeswoman for SDG&E said it fully supports the city in creating the alternative. The mayor's office said it would give updates every two months starting in April. The city hopes to launch the new service in 2021. Councilman Chris Ward issued the following statement Monday: 1972
