CANBERRA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Australian Minister for Defense John Faulkner have vowed to strengthen exchanges between the armed forces of China and Australia.China and Australia shared common interests and desire in ensuring the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region, said a joint statement released by Guo and Faulkner Friday.The two sides hailed the development of their military-to-military relationship in recent years and said positive outcomes had been achieved through senior visits and exchanges in education, training and technical areas.Both sides agreed that strengthening open dialogue on defense and security issues between Australia and China was conducive to promoting bilateral relations.The statement said China and Australia were both pleased with the outcomes of the current visit and the opportunity it provided to further strengthen bilateral ties and military exchanges.The Sino-Australia defense relationship was an important part of bilateral ties and both sides would work concertedly to sustain sound and stable development in this regard, it said.Both countries should respect and take into full consideration each other's core interests and major concerns, and develop ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the statement said. SIRTE, Libya, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China expects that the Arab summit in Libya can coordinate the inter-Arab relations and make achievements in the Palestinian cause, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday."We hope the Arab countries could coordinate internal relations and achieve positive results in reconciliation among Palestinian factions as well as the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli talks at the summit," said China's Special Envoy to Middle East Wu Sike in an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the 22nd Arab Summit in the Libyan city of Sirte.As a special representative of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Wu attended the opening ceremony of the summit at the invitation of the Arab League Secretariat. CHENGDU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday started construction of a center in southwestern China's Sichuan Province to train giant pandas born in captivity to live in the wild.The center is located at Majiagou of Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, said Zhang Zhihe, head of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base and founder of the center.The center covers an area of 134.87 hectares and will cost 160 million yuan (23.5 million U.S. dollars).After the center is completed, the breeding and research base will put 40 to 50 giant pandas raised in captivity into the center for training and research, according to Zhang.The center will cooperate with the Chengdu breeding and research base, the Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Base, the Dujiangyan Disease Control and Prevention Center for Giant Pandas and the Shaanxi Rescue Center for Endangered Animals.In the experimental zone of the center being built, the giant pandas will be trained to reduce their dependency on humans. But they will still live in cages.After five to 10 years training in the experimental zone, the giant pandas that perform well will be introduced into the "half-natural" zone.In the following five to 10 years, the pandas there will live in tree holes or caves and forage for food. But they will still receive frequent checkups and participate in artificial breeding.Then, only one or two of the giant pandas will have the chance to spend another five to 10 years in a nearly "natural" zone with little human contact. Then they will be released into the nearby giant panda natural reserve, Zhang said.Giant pandas are the world's most endangered species. Some 1,590 panda live in the wild and over 300 pandas are in captivity in China, Zhang said.China started a giant panda training project in 2003 to teach the animals to live in the wild. But the project suffered a major setback when Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male panda, was found dead in a remote part of the Wolong Nature Reserve in February 2007.Xiang Xiang was released into the wild in April 2006 after nearly three years of training.

HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day.
