President Donald Trump criticized the separation of children and parents at the US border on Saturday, despite the fact that his own administration has supported a policy that could lead to an uptick in separating families."Put pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there (sic) parents once they cross the Border into the U.S.," the President tweeted on Saturday.CNN has reported that the Trump administration has made a decision?to refer anyone caught crossing the border illegally for federal prosecution. That policy may result in more parents and children being separated at the border.Attorney General Jeff Sessions said earlier this month, "if you cross the border unlawfully ... we will prosecute you," adding, "If you're smuggling a child, then we're going to prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you, probably, as required by law. If you don't want your child separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally." 1011

President Donald Trump observed the 16th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in ceremonies Monday at the Pentagon, promising that the United States will "prevail" and that the memory of those lost will "never, ever die.""On that day, not only did the world change but we all changed," Trump said at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial."Our eyes were opened to the depths of the evil we face but in that hour of darkness we also came together with renewed purpose. Our differences never looked so small. Our common bonds never felt so strong," he added. 581

President Donald Trump has encouraged police officers to be rougher on suspects they arrest. He has deployed federal authorities to stem gun violence in Chicago. And he has repeatedly called for police nationwide to implement tough-on-crime policies. But when it comes to the deaths of black men at the hands of police, Trump believes those incidents are a "local matter" that "should be left up to the local authorities," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday."Certainly a terrible incident," Sanders said when asked about the fatal police shootings of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Stephon Clark in California. "This is something that is a local matter and that's something that we feel should be left up to the local authorities at this point in time."Louisiana's attorney general on Tuesday announced the state would not be filing charges against the two officers involved in Sterling's death. The US Justice Department had announced in May that it would not bring civil rights charges against the officers following an investigation.Pressed about the national implications of the cases and the national outcry that has sounded out in the wake of numerous police shootings of black men in recent years, Sanders stood by her comments."Certainly, we want to make sure that all law enforcement is carrying out the letter of the law. The President is very supportive of law enforcement, but at the same time in these specific cases and these specific instances, those will be left up to the local authorities," Sanders said.Sanders then pivoted to the President's economic and security policies that she said are aimed at benefiting all Americans, including recent policies aimed at boosting school safety in the wake of the Parkland mass shooting."I think we should do every single thing we can every single day to protect the people of this country," Sanders said. "Whether they're black, white, Hispanic, male or female, rich or poor, we look for ways to protect individuals in this country, particularly children."Trump has not commented on the death of Stephon Clark, the unarmed black man who was shot and killed last week by Sacramento, California, police in his grandmother's backyard after police thought he was holding a gun. Only a cell phone was found alongside his body.He also has not commented on the Louisiana attorney general's decision not to file charges against the officers involved in Sterling's death. The White House was first pressed on Clark's death Monday, when deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah said he was "not aware of any comments that (Trump) has" on the matter."Obviously, the President cares about any individual who would be harmed through no fault of their own," Shah said. 2756

President Donald Trump on Thursday granted a posthumous pardon to boxer Jack Johnson on the advice of actor Sylvester Stallone."Today I've issued an executive grant of clemency, a full pardon, posthumously, to John Arthur 'Jack' Johnson ... The first African-American heavyweight champion of the world, a truly great fighter. Had a tough life," Trump said.Trump was joined in the Oval Office by Stallone, current heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, and Johnson's great-great niece Linda Bell Haywood, among others."We have done something today that was very important, because we righted a wrong," Trump said. "Jack Johnson was not treated fairly, and we have corrected that, and I'm very honored to have done it."Last month, Trump said he was considering the pardon."Sylvester Stallone called me with the story of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson. His trials and tribulations were great, his life complex and controversial," Trump tweeted. "Others have looked at this over the years, most thought it would be done, but yes, I am considering a Full Pardon!"Johnson, the first African-American world heavyweight boxing champion, was convicted in 1913 under the Mann Act for taking his white girlfriend across state lines for "immoral" purposes. The Mann Act purported to prevent human trafficking for the purpose of prostitution, but critics have argued it was applied inconsistently to criminalize African Americans and those with dissenting political views.Johnson was convicted by an all-white jury in less than two hours and was imprisoned for a year. The sentence and imprisonment destroyed the boxing career of the "Galveston Giant." He died in 1946.Stallone called Johnson an "inspirational character.""It's incredible that you've done this," the "Rocky" star told the President."It's an honor to take a fictional character like Rocky and do something in the world of reality," Stallone said, thanking Johnson's niece. In 2016, then-Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, and Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, along with Reps. Peter King, R-New York, and Gregory Meeks, D-New York, petitioned the Obama administration to grant a pardon to Johnson. The bipartisan group of lawmakers sent a letter to the White House asking that the pardon be given in honor of the 70th anniversary of the boxer's death."While it is unfortunate that this unjust conviction was not corrected during the boxer's lifetime, a posthumous pardon today represents the opportunity to reaffirm Jack Johnson's substantial contributions to our society and right this historical wrong," the letter said.In March 2017, Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, joined with McCain, King and Meeks to reintroduce a resolution urging Johnson's pardon."Despite this resolution passing both chambers of Congress several times in recent years, no pardon has been issued to date," McCain said in a statement at the time. "I hope President Trump will seize the opportunity before him to right this historical wrong and restore a great athlete's legacy." 3008

President Donald Trump boasted at a private fundraiser Wednesday of making up trade claims during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before knowing whether they were true."Trudeau came to see me. He's a good guy, Justin. He said, 'No, no, we have no trade deficit with you, we have none. Donald, please,'" Trump said during a speech to donors in Missouri, according to audio obtained by The Washington Post and confirmed to CNN by an attendee. "Nice guy, good-looking guy, comes in — 'Donald, we have no trade deficit.' He's very proud because everybody else, you know, we're getting killed." 619
