BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday launched an online database on Marxist theory by uploading the Party's major political doctrines to an Internet website, an effort that analysts said is promoting its ideology through information technology.Uploaded contents to www.ccpph.com.cn include collected works in Chinese of Karl Marx, Frederick Engels, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, as well as former CPC leaders Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin.All the works are available free of charge for Internet users to read, while visually impaired readers can listen to recorded voices reciting the content in Chinese.The website also contains dozens of works explaining the doctrines, research of the communist party as well as the CPC's important documents, files and speeches of General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Jintao and other current leaders.The database is sponsored by People's Publishing House, copyright owner of those Chinese works and major publisher of translated works of foreign political figures in China.Liu Binjie, Director of General Administration of Press and Publication, said that the official launch of these works on the Internet would expand the spread of Marxist theories.The world has entered an era when information, digitalization and other new communication methods are booming, said Huang Shuyuan, president of the People's Publishing House.The more advanced and powerful communication methods a party uses, the more influential it will be, Huang said.To help online readers find a classic Marxist reading, the database of the website provides a smart search function which finds the origin based on fractional words that readers input."It will greatly help researchers on Marxist doctrines like me, since many of those works could only be available in libraries," said Professor Zhang Guangming with the School of International Relations of Peking University."We could search for information about Marxist works at any time in my reading room," Zhang said.Prof. Zhang Xixian with the Party School of the CPC Central Committee said that the online database represents a new trend for the Party to promote its theories in a more attractive way.By the end of last year, the number of Internet users in China had reached 384 million users, covering about 28.9 percent of the country's total population.Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, also attached great importance to the publication of the Party's theories by using multimedia technologies.The People's Publishing House plans to digitalize its 3.6 billion-word Marxist theories books within two years to complete the database and provide it free of charge to the public.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province.Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province.The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province.However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned assets in China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOE) reached 2.01 trillion yuan (297.40 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of June, up 10.71 percent from 2008, China's state-owned assets regulator said on Thursday.Nearly a quarter of the SOEs have state-owned assets over 10 billion yuan each, while six have state-owned assets over 100 billion yuan, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said in a statement on its website."China's state-owned capital has been flowing towards big companies with international competitiveness," said the statement.Some 30 central SOEs are listed as Fortune 500 companies. They are in sectors such as telecommunications, power generation and petro-chemicals.The number of China's central SOEs is 123 in August this year, down from 196 at the beginning of 2003.
