Behind the idea of 'mini weddings' was Los Willows venue owner, Cathie Ransom."With this horrible pandemic that has affected everyone throughout the world, this is a great way to service for our customers that’d like to have a wedding now and not have to wait," Ransom described.The 'mini weddings' didn't include everything a traditional wedding would like dinner and dancing but it was close."We have the officiant, the wedding cake, the photographer to capture memories, so everything is there ready to go so they don’t have to worry about a thing."It allowed up to 10 guests, all social distanced and came at a fraction of the price."Our couples arrive then they have time to get ready, and then they start the ceremony. We have the cutting of the wedding cake and then we have photos," Ransom added.She said when the pandemic hit, it forced her Oceanside venue to close. But thankfully with quick thinking of 'mini weddings', her Fallbrook location stayed open was able to satisfy anxious couples."I feel like whenever life throws you a curve, you just got to get up and figure it out and usually its for the better."It was a popular choice for those near and far."We’re getting couples from LA, Riverside and Orange County driving down because they don’t want to travel too far."The 2-hour window let Ransom fit up to four weddings in a day and allowed her to keep costs low. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two women who worked as massage therapists at the Grand Del Mar are suing the resort’s parent company, claiming the spa allowed them to be sexually harassed by male clients. Christina Murphy and Madeline Flores made allegations this week of sexual harassment, failure to prevent harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation against FHR GDM Hotel Management Company LLC. The women’s claims involve two spa clients, Steve Hodsdon and Juan Pablo Mariscal, who the women say made inappropriate advances during scheduled massage appointments. The Grand allowed clients to disregard protocols for keeping themselves covered and repeatedly exposed themselves to therapists, according to a court document filed by the women’s attorney. The male clients also made sexually suggestive comments and gestures and propositioned their therapists for sexual favors, the document said. The legal complaint also details issues Flores and Murphy said they addressed to the spa’s lead massage therapist, manager, director, and human resources representative. The Grand “ignored the complaints and tried to brush them under the rug to keep these male clients coming to the Spa,” the document reads. Both Flores and Murphy used administrative channels to make complaints in Aug. 2018, filing sexual harassment complaints with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. On Feb. 26, 2019, Murphy and Flores amended their complaints to include a claim of construction discharge in violation of FEHA or wrongful termination, respectively, and the DFEH closed their cases. The women say they suffered emotional distress, mental anguish, nervousness, grief, anxiety, worry, shock, humiliation, and shame.In a statement sent to 10News, Murphy said, "From the beginning, the Grand Del Mar makes it clear that as massage therapists, we should feel privileged to work on such high-end clientele. This creates a power differential where the guests have all the power and the therapists are powerless to challenge inappropriate conduct. The sexual intimidation by these male clients caused me so much fear – fear of what these men were capable of and fear of retaliation by the Grand for reporting them. But I had to speak up to protect myself and my coworkers. When it became obvious that the Grand was not going to protect me, I did the only thing I knew would keep this from happening to me again – I quit."Flores said in the same statement, "What happened to me and Christina never should have happened. The Grand should have taken action to stop this harassment the first time it received complaints about these men. But the Grand did nothing and we ultimately paid the price. The Grand made me feel unsafe at work when they were supposed to be the ones to protect me. This was a profession that I went to school for and that I loved, and now, I have lost my passion for it. I was scared to come forward but ultimately, I felt I had to come forward because I do not want what happened to me to happen to other massage therapists."Their attorney, Alreen Haeggquist, with Haeggquist & Eck, LLP said, “The law is simple and straightforward: an employer has a duty to protect its employees from harassment. But in the face of multiple detailed complaints by its female massage therapists over a period of years, the Grand has chosen to instead protect the perpetrators. The Grand has made a clear choice: the tens of thousands of dollars its predatory male clients spend at the Hotel is far more important than the safety of its female employees. For the right amount of money, the Grand will ignore clients who remove all draping, grind on the massage table, expose their erect penises and ask its therapists for prostate massages. Over the past few years, the Grand has refused to accept any responsibility for its systemic failures. They have had multiple opportunities to do the right thing and protect their female massage therapists – and time after time, they’ve failed to do so. Well, time’s up.”The plaintiffs believe no fewer than six massage therapists may have been victimized, the court document says. The hotel responded in a statement of its own, "Fairmont Grand Del Mar acts diligently to investigate employee complaints and is confident that there was no wrongdoing by the hotel in connection with this matter. The safety of our guests and our colleagues is a top priority and providing a healthy work environment remains paramount. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, many businesses continue to struggle in San Diego County, and some business owners say they can’t afford to pay their rent anymore without their usual income during this pandemic.Landlords are also feeling the effects of the small business struggle.“Many tenants are paying their rents, there aren’t many tenants paying their rents from profits,” said Sandy Sigal, CEO of NewMark Merrill Companies. “We’re not going to make any money or have any profits this year at all, we know that, but we do need enough money to pay our mortgages and lenders.NewMark Merrill Companies own about 80 shopping centers in three states, including California. We’re doing what we can.”But Sigal said landlords could only do so much, and it’s up to the government to step in and help save these businesses.“If there was a fire or earthquake or flood, they would have insurance for all this,” he said. “We need to extend what was PPP or The RESTART Act. I’m in favor of some stimulus to the unemployed.”Without additional assistance now, it’s a struggle he expects to continue until significant changes are made, and businesses can fully bounce back.“If the government helps my tenants, I’d be helped enough,” he said. “This is no one’s fault, but the pandemic and we all got to get through this together.” 2393

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wherever a Topgolf is built in San Diego, it's bound to tee-up some criticism.But as it stands, a potential East Harbor Island location facing golfers toward the downtown skyline may not end up being an option.The Board of Port Commissioners decided to delay a decision earlier this month on entering an exclusive negotiation agreement with Topgolf.RELATED: Gaslamp Quarter thoroughfare may become a promenadeThe Port directed staff to begin mapping out an agreement with Topgolf late last year. East Harbor Island was floated as a potential location at the time. But an agreed upon location must be chosen first before the negotiation starts.During the Feb. 11 meeting, commissioners were presented a study on developing the Harbor Island site and how Topgolf could work into that plan. Three diagrams showed the site's possibilities, with or without Topgolf:A "phase one" diagram included a potential Topgolf plus a 400-space parking lot and 500-room hotel and parking structure on the east side of the island. The "phase two" rendering kept Topgolf and the east-end hotel, but added a hotel development to the facility's west side that could have a shared parking structure with Topgolf.The final diagram depicted three hotel developments on the East Harbor Island land, without Topgolf. All the diagrams were meant to be illustrative of potential ideas of the site, not an official plan. "I'm just not feeling it ... I just feel that it's an expensive use. It's a lot of land.""It seems to me we have one decision or one issue we need to discuss, which is do we want to have Topgolf in this location," said chair Anne Moore. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  With three kids at home, including a newborn, managing a family budget is always a struggle for Theresa Washington and her husband. They're trying to survive on his Navy salary, which, some months, doesn't entirely cover everything."You try to balance everything and try to budget and hope that it will get through," Washington says.Theresa used to be in the Navy as well. She quit when daycare for the kids got too costly.RELATED: Rep. Susan Davis backs legislation making military families eligible for food aidOver the years, her family has moved from Florida to Minnesota to San Diego through Naval deployments and re-stationing. She says California is easily the most expensive place she's lived.Fortunately, in 2017, Washington found the Military Distribution Program through Jewish Family Service.Once a month, JFS does a food giveaway at Camp Pendleton and the Murphy Canyon military housing. Aside from proof of active military service, there are no eligibility requirements."Making this just for them, I think it shows them a little more dignity and allows them to access the services they need within their communities," says Sasha Escue, who runs the Food and Nutrition Program for JFS.The Military Distribution Program started ten years ago, as JFS and other groups began to notice the trend. At the Jewish Family Service food distribution, families can get fresh fruit and vegetables, diapers and frozen meat. They try to make sure the food they give away is nutritious and balanced. In 2017, JFS served 1,000 individual military families.As word gets around, they expect that number to rise."My friends and I remind each other every month," says Washington.According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, 1 in 10 people who go to food banks has a military member in their family. They believe that number is even higher in San Diego where the cost of living can quickly eat through paychecks."These are community members who are making the ultimate commitment with their lives and their time," says Hunger Coalition Executive Director Anahid Brakke. "We should be paying enough that they don't have to go to food distribution."According to numbers provided by the Hunger Coalition, enlisted servicemen and women with under two years of service make between ,200 and ,500 per year. That should qualify them for government food assistance like WIC or SNAP. But, because their housing allowances are also factored into their annual income, many are over the federal poverty level limits to quality.Some people are trying to change that. Representative Susan Davis introduced H.R. 1078 in Congress, the Military Hunger Prevention Act. According to language in the bill, it's designed to exclude housing allowances from determining eligibility for federal assistance. It's currently in the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel.In the meantime, military advocates say the best way to help out is to donate to local food banks, like Feeding San Diego. It's a way to make sure military members can serve and their families can eat."It's amazing," says Washington. "We can't thank them enough for helping us." 3175
