SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Uber has filed paperwork with the FAA to start testing drones in San Diego for food delivery.The petition seeks a series of exemptions that would allow Uber to use drones to transport food in the city of San Diego.The FAA recently granted its first air carrier certification to a drone company, Wing Aviation, which will begin testing in Blacksburg, Virginia.In Uber’s application, it said it would be using the AirRobot 200 drone, a hexa-copter which is larger than typical drones used by videographers.It says the drones would not fly higher than 400 feet and have a range of 3.5 miles.There is currently a public comment period on the FAA’s website.An FAA spokesperson told 10News, “we will thoroughly evaluate all comments we receive, as well as the petitioner’s proposal and associated safety measures, before making a decision.”Uber declined to comment for this story. 901

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second man has been charged in the smuggling of a Bengal tiger cub into the United States from Mexico on August 23, 2017.Eriberto Paniagua - who allegedly told officials at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry that the Bengal tiger cub at his feet was merely a “cat” - was indicted by a federal grand jury and made his first court appearance on Monday. According to the indictment unsealed today, the 21-year-old conspired with the driver of the car, 18-year-old Luis Valencia, and others to knowingly import the tiger cub into the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two teens are dead after a car reportedly struck a freeway guardrail in Mission Valley, before flipping over into an embankment and bursting into flames.Witnesses told CHP they saw a car speeding on the ramp from westbound Interstate 8 to southbound State Route 163 just after 3 a.m. Saturday. The car hit a guardrail and flipped over the edge of the freeway and fell down onto an embankment below, CHP says.By the time authorities arrived on scene, the vehicle was on fire.Three of the four occupants, including the driver, were pulled from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital. Officers tried to pull the fourth person from the vehicle, but say flames overtook the car.After the Medical Examiner arrived to help retrieve the fourth person, they said a second body was found in the charred wreck. It was unclear it the fifth occupant was killed in the crash or fire.The two victims were described as being 15 years old.CHP said they suspect drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Because of that, the driver could be charged with manslaughter, CHP says.The crash closed the onramps from southbound SR-163 to westbound I-8 and WB I-8 to SB SR-163. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote.
