The alleged victims of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein are angry they will not get the opportunity to face in court the man they say raped them as girls."We have to live with the scars of his actions for the rest of our lives, while he will never face the consequences of the crimes he committed, the pain and trauma he caused so many people," Jennifer Araoz, who accused Epstein of raping her when she was 15, said in a statement. The multimillionaire hedge fund manager's death from an apparent suicide Saturday in his cell ends the criminal case against him, but what does that mean for his accusers' quest for justice?Authorities have said they will continue to investigate Epstein's alleged actions, and US Attorney General William Barr said Monday the case "will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein." At the same time, legal experts say the civil cases against Epstein, and anyone connected to the allegations in the case, will continue."It is a shame that Epstein will not face justice, and the survivors in this case will not have the satisfaction of his conviction," Scott Berkowitz, president of RAINN -- one of the largest anti-sexual violence organizations in the nation -- told CNN. "However, reporting has made clear that there were others who aided and abetted Epstein in his crimes, and we hope that the US attorney will continue to pursue those individuals. Epstein's death should not let them off the hook."Two unnamed accusers asked a federal judge to roll back a nonprosecution agreement that Epstein reached in 2008 in Florida, which provided immunity to his alleged co-conspirators, according to a court document filed Monday in 1691

The new White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, got into a scuffle with North Korean officials on Sunday during a chaotic scene outside a meeting room where US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un talked privately.A source at the scene said Grisham got in "an all out brawl" with North Korean officials. Grisham was bruised a bit in the scuffle, the source added.Grisham could be seen after the episode directing reporters outside the building in which Kim and Trump met, and she was later seen looking no worse for wear as she accompanied the President at the DMZ.Trump shook hands with Kim on Sunday and took 20 steps into North Korea, making history as the first sitting US leader to set foot in the hermit kingdom. The encounter at the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone -- their third in person -- came a day after Trump raised the prospect of a border handshake in a tweet and declared he'd have "no problem" stepping into North Korea.Grisham, who has been the communications director for first lady Melania Trump for the past two years, was named last week to replace Sarah Sanders as White House press secretary. Grisham will keep her current job too.The first lady announced Grisham would assume the role of both White House press secretary and communications director on Tuesday, tweeting: "I am pleased to announce @StephGrisham45 will be the next @PressSec & Comms Director! She has been with us since 2015 - @POTUS & I can think of no better person to serve the Administration & our country. Excited to have Stephanie working for both sides of the @WhiteHouse. #BeBest" 1645

The mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota, says an internal investigation is warranted after video of the arrest of a 13-year-old black girl sparked angry backlash on social media.Mayor Melvin Carter said Thursday that the video of the girl's arrest, which took place September 26 at a UPS Store, was "disturbing" and "disheartening to watch."Police have said that officers were investigating a report of juveniles trying to break into vehicles when they encountered the girl, and she resisted arrest and refused orders to put her hands behind her back. The arrest video begins with two officers trying to handcuff the teen before two other officers enter to assist in removing her from the store. The girl was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer, obstructing the legal process, fleeing a police officer and trespassing. She was taken to a juvenile detention center. 878

The CEO of Juul is out, as a growing number of vaping-related deaths and threats of federal regulation present a monumental challenge for the e-cigarette company.Juul announced Wednesday that CEO Kevin Burns will be replaced by K.C. Crosthwaite, who had been chief growth officer at tobacco company Altria, a major investor in Juul. In that position, Crosthwaite oversaw an expansion into alternatives to traditional cigarettes. He also played a key role with commercial and regulatory efforts related to the US launch of iQOS, a device that heats tobacco rather than burning it. 591

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has granted executive clemency to Cyntoia Brown by commuting her life sentence. The governor's office announced the decision Monday morning. She will be released to parole supervision on August 7, 2019, after serving 15 years in prison.“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life. Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.”As part of her parole, she cannot violate any state or federal laws and will be subject to a release plan approved by the Tennessee Department of Correction and special supervision conditions, including employment, education, counseling and community engagement requirements.Brown's parole supervision will continue until August 7, 2029, at which point her sentence will expire. In 2006, she was convicted of first-degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery in the killing of Antioch realtor Johnny Allen. She was sentenced to life in prison. At the time of the crime, she was 16-years-old. Advocates have said that Brown, now 30, was a victim of sex trafficking and shot the 43-year-old in self-defense. The man she killed 1590
