NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation's largest beauty chain has a deal to place shops in more than 100 Target stores by mid-2021.Ulta Beauty and Target said Tuesday that the shops will be located next to Target's existing beauty sections. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The partnership comes as the coronavirus pandemic has upended shopping habits. Customers are increasingly focused on one-stop shopping experiences as a way to minimize exposure to COVID-19.But the deal could hurt department stores like Macy's, which had already seen their share of their beauty business eroded even before the pandemic. 620
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell sharply on Wall Street Thursday as high-flying technology companies took a tumble after months of spectacular gains. The benchmark S&P 500 lost 3.5%, its biggest loss since June, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 5%. Both indexes set record highs a day earlier. Apple, the most valuable U.S. company, slumped 8%. Big Tech companies have made outsize gains this year as investors bet that they would continue posting huge profits, even with many coronavirus restrictions still in place, as people spend more time online with their devices. Some worry those tech companies will be hit hard in a souring US-China relationship and any future tariffs, according to CNN. Treasury yields fell as cautious investors shifted money into bonds. 770
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- A man was found decapitated and dismembered in his Lower East Side apartment Tuesday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department. The man's body was found shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the East Houston Street building, officials said.Police identified the victim as 33-year-old Fahim Saleh, a globe-trotting tech entrepreneur, according to his LinkedIn page.According to a police source, it was the victim's own sister who made the grisly discovery in his luxury apartment.Investigators told WPIX that Saleh's sister found an electric saw, still plugged into the outlet, and her brother's limbs placed in bags.Mitchel Glixon was walking his dog past 265 East Houston around 3 p.m. Wednesday when the woman burst out of the lobby, screaming and crying."She just says 'he has no head' and pointed to her arms and kind of making an arm motion as she went back to the lobby. People kind of surrounded her at that point," Glixon said.Officers said the victim was last seen on surveillance video entering the apartment Monday afternoon; 24 hours later, police dogs searched the surrounding area for clues.Police sources said the surveillance video shows Saleh and a well-dressed man all in black following him into the elevator that goes right to his apartment. It is believed this is when he was attacked.Neighbor Jason Gabriel tried to process the news. "It's a scary time right now. People have pent up anger. A lot of stuff is going on, so I'm praying for the guy," he said.Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – A man in Massachusetts is taking extreme measures to ensure his Trump campaign sign isn’t tampered with.John Oliveria of New Bedford says his sign started disappearing from his yard and after going through six, the Navy veteran was fed up.Oliveria, a member of the New Bedford School Committee, has now put electric wire around the sign in his front yard and he tells WJAR it has certainly sent a message to thieves. After two weeks with the fence, the Republican says the sign has stood its ground.Oliveria says Americans have to be able to respect each other, despite political differences. Otherwise, he argues nothing will get accomplished.Oliveria believes the sign supporting President Donald Trump’s reelection bid was specifically singled out, because he also has another sign encouraging people to vote, but that one was never touched. For those wondering if putting electric fencing in residential areas is legal in the state, WJAR reports that it depends on the laws and regulations in each community. If someone were injured because of it, there could be legal trouble. 1108
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Roman Catholic Church used a special and unprecedented exemption from federal rules to amass at least .4 billion in taxpayer-backed coronavirus aid. In totaling the church's haul, The Associated Press also found tens of millions of dollars went to dioceses whose financial stress was due not simply to the pandemic but also to recent payouts to victims of clergy sex abuse. The Paycheck Protection Program the church tapped was intended to help small businesses and nonprofits pay workers amid a cratering economy. The church maximized its take after lobbying for an exemption that gave all religious groups preferential treatment. That helped make the Catholic Church among the biggest winners in the U.S. government's pandemic relief efforts. 779
