(CNS) - Part of Disney California Adventure will open without rides Thursday but plenty of shopping and dining.Billed as an extension of Downtown Disney, Buena Vista Street will be gussied up for the holidays, offering socially distanced outdoor dining at favorite restaurants including Carthay Circle Lounge where Chef Andrew Sutton, culinary director of Signature Restaurants, says Al Fresco Dining at Carthay Circle Lounge will be "like sitting in a European sidewalk cafe.""We literally borrowed tables from some of the other restaurants," he said in remarks reported by the Orange County Register. "Then we started to get more serious about it, bringing in planters, and gardening, and making it look much more refined. The finished product is beautiful."Parts of the park are opening for retail and dining as an extension of the Downtown Disney District. Reservations won't be accepted, but a mobile wait list system will be in place when the restaurant is at capacity.Diners can choose to provide their name and mobile number to receive a text message when it's time to return. Mobile ordering will be available at Smokejumpers Grill and Award Wieners.Buena Vista Street will be open daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There's no admission charge to enter and guests can park in the Simba lot as they do for Downtown Disney. An Ohio woman is filing a lawsuit against the Montgomery County Jail claiming excessive force was used against her.Marsha Pate-Strickland is suing the Montgomery county jail for this video-tapped incident.It happened back in 2015.Pate-Strickland says it all began when she asked a corrections officer at the jail if she could exchange her juice for milk.In the video, you can see the officer grab her and slam her to the floor.Pate-Strickland said she complained that her arm and shoulder were injured. But she refused medical attention.Now she claims she has permanent and debilitating injuries.Officials with the Montgomery County jail have not commented on the lawsuit. 710

As many former college students are getting a reprieve from paying federal student loans, some Democratic leaders are calling on the next president to suspend payments permanently.On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on forgiving federal student loans for those owing less than ,000. Schumer is proposing a resolution to outline how the president should forgive student debt.The resolution would not be applicable to private student loans.In a statement, Schumer said, “For far too long the sunny, American optimism of our young people has been clouded by crippling student debt. Education is supposed to be a ladder up, but studies have shown that student loans hold people back and prevent young college graduates from owning homes or starting small businesses. This holds our entire economy back, which we cannot afford after the financial devastation of COVID. That is why I will prioritize student debt forgiveness in 2021."Schumer’s comments came as the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions met with experts on the government’s student aid program FAFSA.A 2017 federal government study found that 20% of students who took out college loans during the 2003-04 academic year had paid off their debt within 12 years. An Akron, Ohio man will spend at least the next 20 years in prison for selling fentanyl to a woman who overdosed on the drug and died nearly three years ago.Jurmaine A. Jeffries, 29, was convicted of distribution of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute the drug.A jury found that the fentanyl Jeffries sold the woman resulted in her death.On Sept. 16, 2015, the day of her death, the woman texted and called Jeffries to ask about buying heroin. He responded to her messages and told her "B right there."Cell phone records placed Jeffries in the area near the woman's house on the day she died, authorities said.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, after the woman died, police used her phone to text Jeffries about buying more drugs. Police arrested him when he showed up at the woman's house with fentanyl on his person.Sentencing will take place at a later date, but Jeffries is facing a mandatory minimum of two decades in prison for his charges.“We will prosecute those who sell fentanyl and other drugs that kill our friends and neighbors,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “This defendant drove around Akron delivering poison for profit. ANDERSON, Ind. -- A mother and stepfather in Indiana are accused of locking their children in a basement without food, water or a place to go to the bathroom.Connie and her husband Javier Campos were arrested over the weekend and charged with four counts of neglect of a dependent. The investigation began back in November 2017 when a 13-year-old boy ran away from home and was found at a local hotel. At the time, the investigator contacted the Department of Child Services because he believed the children may be in need of services. According to court documents, the couple had four children living in their home ages 13, 11, 10 and 8.The children told investigators that their mother and step-father would lock three of them in the basement of their home any time the adults would leave the house or go to bed.The children described using a bucket and bottle if they needed to go to the bathroom or holding it until morning.  “You go before, hold it or it sucks to be you,” the 13-year-old child told investigators.Each of the children had a bed in their upstairs bedrooms, according to court documents, but they were only there “in case CPS came then they would think we sleep there.” 1217
