CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year.Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said.Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. There still some question about how that will be handled in a remote environment.“I still haven’t heard anything as far as how they are going to specifically address his goals. I’m still waiting and if I don’t hear by the end of the week, I will be reaching out to figure that out,” Chavez said.A district spokesperson said roughly 9,400 devices were distributed last week. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. The remaining time will be independent study, according to the plan released by the district.“I feel like I was torn in three different directions this morning trying to help every child get where they needed to be,” Chavez said. “If I had work today… I think I would have been in tears.”Chavez said she hopes the glitches get resolved by the end of the week.The Sweetwater Union High School District is facing many challenges, including a roughly million budget shortfall.An audit of the district conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) showed there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. 2491

(KGTV) — Police are searching for the person responsible for stabbing a man during a reported fight in Chula Vista.Police said they were called Wednesday just after 1:30 a.m. over a reported fight in the 500 block of Flower Street and that someone had been injured.Chula Vista Police arrived to find a Hispanic man in his 20s unresponsive with a stab wound on his upper body.The man was treated at the scene, but died of his injuries. CINCINNATI -- Police in North Carolina detained a Cincinnati-bound American Airlines passenger Monday after the man reportedly ran off the plane onto the tarmac and swung a punch at an airport worker, Business Insider reported.While boarding Flight 5466 from Charlotte, North Carolina to Cincinnati on Feb. 26, the man appeared disoriented, according to the report. Another passenger on the plan, Kelly Smekens, told video licensing agency Storyful that airline officials asked the man to leave the flight because of his behavior. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Detectives worked Friday to determine who fatally shot a man in a South Bay parking lot, apparently during a quarrel over a dog.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Interstate 5 and state Route 54 shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday found Corey McCastle, 41, on the ground in the 700 block of E Street in Chula Vista, suffering from bullet wounds, according to police.Paramedics took McCastle to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead."The motive for the shooting remains unknown," Lt. Dan Peak said. "However, it is believed McCastle had gone to the location to speak with an unknown individual regarding a dispute over a dog."The shooter was described only as a man dressed in dark-colored clothes and armed with a handgun.Further details on the disagreement that apparently led to the slaying was not immediately available. 888

(KGTV) - A documentary filmmaker is focusing his lens on migrants in Tijuana, hoping to show what life is like for migrants waiting to enter the U.S."Stuck in Tijuana" shows the crisis around the migrant shelters, where filmmaker Charlie Minn says he found a humanitarian crisis."I think we've all been there in life, at one point or another where we ask for something, a job, a relationship, a school, a career," Minn says. "The migrants are asking for acceptance."Minn says he found one shelter where 1,000 people were sharing one bathroom. In other areas he found children living without their parents.He adds that Tijuana's new reputation as the murder capital of the world makes things even more dangerous for migrants in the shelters.Minn spent the last week visiting college classes around San Diego to show the documentary to students. He hopes to inspire them to fight for change.This is Minn's third documentary focused on the San Diego/Tijuana border region. His first one, "Mexico's Bravest Man," profiled a police chief in Tijuana who survivied eight assasination attempts. The next movie, "77 Minutes," examined the 1984 shooting massacre in a San Ysidro McDonald's.Minn says he's captivated by the border in this area, because it's unlike any other region in the US.The movie will premiere Friday, March 22nd at the Theater Box in downtown San Diego.
