SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New numbers show just how quickly housing has become unaffordable in San Diego county.Housing received a thumbs-down because the Housing Affordability Index for San Diego County decreased from 26% in December 2017 to 24% in December 2018. In 2012, more than 45% of county residents could buy a median-priced home.The report on housing affordability was part of the annual Quality of Life Dashboard released by the Equinox Project, The Nonprofit Institute at University of San Diego. "The change is steep and following the state trends," said Christiana DeBenedict of The Nonprofit Institute.RELATED: San Diego among top hot housing markets for 2019, Zillow reportsAccording to the report, 38% of local homeowners devote more than a third of their income to their mortgage. The renters' situation isn't much better. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in San Diego County, 57% of people pay more than 30% of their income on rent. San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties have the highest proportion of people paying over 30% of their income on rent.DeBenedict says add it all up, and it hurts locals employers trying attract and keep talent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday afternoon, the San Diego City Council rescinded regulations on short-term rentals in an 8-1 vote. On Aug. 1, the council voted 6-2 in favor of rules to regulate short-term vacation rentals in San Diego. The regulations were set to take effect in July 2019. These regulations limited the rentals to primary residences, which would force some investors or owners of more than one home to sell their properties or rent them out long-term.City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was Monday’s lone vote against the repeal.The group Share San Diego called Monday's vote "an important step towards fair and effective short-term rental regulations." 690
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Portable restrooms to combat the hepatitis A outbreak are being installed in downtown San Diego for the homeless.The City of San Diego is providing restrooms, hand-washing stations and security guards to stop the spread of the disease.The restrooms will be cleaned twice a day.RELATED: How to tell if you have hepatitis AKen Slusher, a homeless Navy veteran, has used the restrooms twice since the City installed them on C St. and First Ave.Slasher is concerned the restrooms won’t be around long.Despite the 24/7 security, Slusher said he found a needle on the floor during one of his trips to the restroom.RELATED: Los Angeles hepatitis A cases linked to San Diego outbreak“It was already used, the cap was off, the needle was exposed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was killed and another was injured after a house party in a south central San Diego neighborhood turned deadly.San Diego Police received reports of gunfire just after midnight Saturday in the area of Julian and Marcy Avenues in Logan Heights. Police on scene said an argument at a party escalated into a shooting. At least two people were hit by gunfire.Crews on scene were captured performing chest compression on one person as they were loaded into an ambulance.A man in his 20s was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Another person was injured but refused medical attention, police said. Neither victim has been identified.Police said the suspect fled the scene.
