New results on a possible COVID-19 vaccine from Oxford University and drugmaker AstraZeneca suggest it is safe and about 70% effective.Some experts say that shows it is likely to win approval, but questions remain about how well it may help protect those over 55. However, independent experts have said the second group was too small — 2,741 people — to judge the possible value of that approach and more testing is needed.The interim analysis for efficacy was based on 11,636 participants accruing 131 symptomatic infections from the Phase III trials.In addition to the Oxford led program, AstraZeneca is conducting a large study in the US and globally. In total, Oxford University and AstraZeneca expect to enroll more than 60,000 participants globally.The company says it’s also making progress in manufacturing with a capacity of up to 3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021 on a rolling basis, pending regulatory approval. NEW ORLEANS — A fast-moving Zeta has weakened to a tropical storm as it barrels northeast after causing havoc along the Gulf Coast.The storm raged onshore Wednesday afternoon in the small village of Cocodrie in Louisiana as a strong Category 2 and then moved swiftly across the New Orleans area and into neighboring Mississippi.The National Hurricane Center says strong and damaging wind gusts will continue to spread well inland across portions of Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia on Thursday. This could cause widespread tree damage and power outages.Nearly 2 million homes were already without power across several southern states before dawn Thursday. According to the website PowerOutage.us, about 1.8 million are without power in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Georgia has the most with more than 800,000 in the dark.Officials have made a repeated call for residents to stay inside after the storm passed and not go outside in the dark to assess damage.Throughout Thursday, NHC says heavy rainfall is expected near and in advance of Zeta in portions of the central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic and lower to middle Ohio Valley. NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for two suspects they say attacked a woman who asked them to put on masks in a Brooklyn subway station.Authorities said the assault occurred inside the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station last Friday afternoon.According to the NYPD, as a man and a woman were about to get on a station elevator, the 60-year-old victim asked if they could wear a mask if they wanted to ride the elevator with her.According to police, the pair refused. Surveillance video shows the two try to forcefully push past her.When the woman tried to prevent them from getting on the elevator with her, the two suspects hit her repeatedly in the face and body, authorities said. The male and female then fled the scene.Police said the victim suffered bruising to her face and pain to her legs.
