On May 13, 2019, Lewis pulled welding gloves over his hands to fuse his initials into the keel plate of the USNS John Lewis at the General Dynamics Shipyard — the lead ship in a class of oiler vessels.Consistent with his commitment to non-violence, the ships will be non-combat vessels but play a vital role in refueling other ships at sea."For the U.S. Navy and former Secretary Ray Mabus to see fit to honor me in this way is unreal and almost unimaginable," Lewis said in a statement last year. "I only try to do what is fair, what is right, and what is just and get in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction.The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting Sunday night and going until May 30, construction crews will close either northbound or southbound lanes of I-5 overnight to begin construction of the Mid-Coast Trolley.Drivers will see heavy equipment and machinery on the freeway, and residents can expect to hear loud construction noise during the closures.The project will start with a large support column for the trolley bridge in the freeway center divider.The trolley is being built to extend the Blue Line eleven miles north from the Old Town Transit Center to University City, running through Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego and Westfield University Town Center Mall.The Mid-Coast Trolley is expected to start running in fall 2021. 748

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some San Diego Police Department officers are being isolated as they await test results for coronavirus, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit.Those officers were exposed to the virus and are currently under isolation, Chief Nisleit told 10News anchor Jim Patton. A police spokesperson added that officers have been self-reporting possible exposure, both on-duty and off-duty. A medical expert then determines if they should be tested. "We're taking great care of them, absolutely," Nisleit added.Precautions are being taken by law enforcement across the county. A spokesperson from Oceanside Police says they're doing more phone or online reports when possible. Dispatch and officers are also asking more questions about cold and flu-like symptoms.A video from the Chula Vista Department tells the public, "We may ask you to wear a mask."Starting Friday, Chula Vista Police will be taking an extra step. A spokesperson says they'll strongly suggest officers wear protective equipment for all interactions with the public closer than six feet. The San Diego Sheriff's Department, along with El Cajon, Chula Vista, Oceanside, and Carlsbad Police say none of their officers has tested positive. San Diego County reported Thursday that 341 residents have tested positive for coronavirus. So far, three deaths have resulted from the virus locally. 2096
