SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s boating community is stepping up to help a family who lost their floating home in a fire. The boat, Both/And World, caught fire while docked at the Shelter Island Marina Saturday just before 3 p.m. "I was just merely walking off of the boat and saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react,” said witness Charlie Colson. The man who lived on the boat with his family grabbed a small hose and tried to put out the flames, Colson said. People on shore grabbed a larger hose and had most of the flames knocked down by the time firefighters arrived. Colson said the family, which includes the man’s wife and 6-year-old son with special needs, had just moved on to the boat last week. The only salvageable items were the boy’s stuffed Donald Duck and his iPad. According to Colson, the flames were sparked by a lithium battery on a charger. Investigators have yet to release the official cause of the fire. “It’s gonna change their plans for a little but it’ll all work out,” said Colson. “The lucky part: no one was hurt; no other boats damaged; family’s okay, other than being rattled.” Colson believes the boat is a total loss. However, the sailing community has offered other boats to the family. 1328

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony.The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some 4,500 sailors and marines reunited with their families at Naval Base Coronado Friday. Eight months ago, the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Essex and two support ships, the Anchorage and Rushmore, set sail for the Western Pacific and Middle East.The deployment was of historic significance as the military's newest, multi-use fighter jet, the F-35B flew its first combat missions in support of U.S. troops. The Navy reported the jet supported troops in Iraq, Syria and Afghanastan but the exact nature of that support not being divulged at this point. However, the Essex commander confirmed armaments were used by the aircraft.Friday, the primary focus was hugs and kisses. The "official first kisses" involved two young sailors greeting their wives with long embraces. Fathers also met their babies in person for the first time. One dad told 10News it was impossible to put into words how good it felt to hold his new son. The infant, who seemed at ease in his father's arms, then gave a big smile. Sailor Rhett Orth also held his baby girl for first time. His sentiment shared by many, of how hard it is to be away from home but how amazing it feels to be back. His little girl, seemly overwhelmed by the moment herself, began to cry.The two support ships, Anchorage and Rushmore, also returned Friday morning. They docked at Naval Base San Diego. 1378

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several protesters were arrested in downtown San Diego Friday night as demonstrators gathered following a grand jury announcement in the Breonna Taylor case.San Diego Police tweeted just before 11 p.m. that three protesters were arrested at B Street and Columbia Street.One of the demonstrators was arrested for robbery of a cell phone while two others were arrested for interfering with an arrest. Police said a cell phone was stolen from a victim while they were recording the protesters.Police said earlier that roughly 40 to 50 protesters gathered in the downtown area.“We are again with the group to ensure they remain safe and the community remains safe. Traffic may be temporarily interrupted,” the department tweeted. 753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sara Jacobs, winner of the race to replace the retiring Susan Davis in California's 53rd district, is getting ready to begin the transition to Congress."Kind of feels like college. I’ll be going to freshman orientation, picking my office room, staffing my office. Talking with congresswoman Davis, to others about a transition. And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans. "As young people, we need somebody who understands the dynamic and the perspective that we are coming from," says Glass Blake.Glass Blake says that while she knows Jacobs will work hard to represent all members of her district, she also realizes the importance of serving as a young woman in Congress.
