Melania Trump says she and President Donald Trump have faith in judges and the legal system to rule justly -- a statement that appears out of step with the president. At an event Monday in Pennsylvania, the president assailed as “very dangerous” a decision by Pennsylvania’s top court to allow mailed ballots received in the three days after Tuesday’s election to be counted.Later Monday, the first lady addressed a Trump rally in Huntersville, North Carolina. She expressed faith in the doctors, nurses, and scientists working on the coronavirus pandemic.Trump suggested Monday that he might fire Dr. Anthony Fauci after the election.Trump has disagreed with pandemic advice from Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert and member of the White House coronavirus task force. 795

MENTOR, Ohio — A simple box that might look more at home in an apartment building is what the U.S. Postal Service says is the future of daily mail delivery. "We've gone to all Cluster Box Units, at the request of the U.S. Postal Service," said Sommers Real Estate President Rick Sommers. He says every new development that real estate groups like his build have the simply boxed called Cluster Boxes. The Postal Service says they cut down on the cost of individual boxes, locked boxes keep sensitive mail safe and make delivery a one-stop shop. "Obviously the post office truck doesn't have to stop at every house, blocking traffic," said Sommers. It's a trend that could help with some mail delivery concerns we told you about in the past. Residents near Akron were concerned with inconsistent delivery and letters going to their neighbors' homes.Sommers says this new way is going to be even more common in Northeast Ohio as the housing market continues to climb."There weren't any lots developed from about 2005 to about 2011, so there was a pent-up demand for new lots now that the housing market is back and strong," said Sommers. The Postal Service says the boxes could foster a stronger sense of community, almost like a new water cooler. Walking to the same spot to get their mail creates a place where neighbors can get to know each other, or even just get out for a stroll."We are designing and integrating walking paths throughout the communities, even though it is Northeast Ohio and we have some bad weather," said Sommers. One concern is that without mailboxes it might be harder for the police or fire departments to find the addresses that need their help. All the departments we spoke to say it hasn't been a problem, as long as home addresses are clearly labeled, even without a mailbox. If you are having issues with your mail delivery, you can contact the U.S. Postal Service at usps.com or over the phone at 1-800-275-8777 (1-800-ASK-USPS). 2010

Many small businesses are struggling after the pandemic shut down a number of industries. Recently, more than 2,400 small businesses gave their thoughts on how various levels of government are helping them during this tough time.Nate Chai, who heads up the Pro Engagement Team at Thumbtack, says "the purpose of the survey is really to find out how small businesses across the country feel about the public policies that they're working with at the local, state and national levels. Do they feel supported? Do they feel the right policies are in place? Are things changing year-over-year for them?"Thumbtack, an online company that connects people with local independent professionals in industries like construction, wellness and music, conducts a small business friendliness survey every year. This year, they wanted to check in with the small businesses on their site to see how they were doing amid this COVID-19 pandemic."What we did notice is that there were strong divergent between how many felt their states and local governments were doing versus what they saw from the federal government. To put that in perspective, we saw many states score A, A- or B in terms of that local response but at the federal level people almost universally what people were seeing was not good enough," said Chai.Chai says overwhelmingly, small business owners gave the federal government an F when it came to their response. "We saw several states earn Fs and unfortunately the worst of those, starting from the bottom up were Arizona followed by Oregon, Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee," said Chai. The highest ranked states were Vermont, which received an A+, followed by A ratings for Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and an A for Maryland. Gerard Cassagnol, the Engineering and Operations Manager for Trevor Technical Solutions in Maryland, took part in the survey."It started off really good here in Maryland. They were very proactive in how to address the pandemic. What I basically mean is they were going by the science," Cassagnol said. Cassagnol says the funding, though, from State and Federal levels, was lacking, as well as information and guidance about programs and how to operate has been inconsistent. Cassagnol says before the pandemic, 80 percent of his company's revenue came from work from the government. Over the last three months, that dwindled down to 5 percent, putting his business in a dire state and prompting him to lay off staff. "It's a survival instinct right now that we're operating on," said Cassagnol.Of the roughly 2,400 businesses that took the survey, 65 percent had only one employee, in that the person owned their business and works alone; 28 percent had two to five employees and the remaining six percent had more than six employees."Given what’s going on, it's a great time to consider reaching out to small businesses if you’ve got those projects on the back burners, and finding ways to support small businesses if you have the means," said Chai."We've got to find a solution to this. America is going to suffer ultimately if the small business isn't there," said Cassagnol. Thumbtack is encouraging people to support their local businesses in any way they can right now as many feel uncertain when or if they will recover from this economic downturn. 3306

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — President Donald Trump canceled a planned appearance in western Wisconsin amid calls from the city's mayor and the state's governor, both Democrats, that he not hold a rally amid a surge in coronavirus cases. The director of the La Crosse airport said the event was canceled due to a lease issue, not concerns over the coronavirus. Trump replaced the La Crosse rally with one in Janesville, located about 175 miles away, prompting authorities there to also ask the president to reconsider. Trump is also holding a rally Saturday in Green Bay. Both will be outside at airports. State health officials reported 2,887 newly confirmed cases on Thursday, a new daily record, along with 21 more deaths. 725

MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. - With houses side-by-side on Briggs Road in Middleville, Austin McKian and Erand Smith describe themselves as typical neighbors.“I’ll be out doing yard work and stuff and he’ll just come over and he’ll just help,” said Smith. They try to help each other out whenever they can, doing yard work, cleaning gutters, or shoveling snow.“I love helping people,” said McKian. “If I can help anyone when the time is there, I’ll try to do it.”Their latest act of service though is taking it a step forward.“We just took a bad situation and made it into something good, something funny,” said McKian.Smith, a sculptor, created a one-of-a-kind, monster-esque prosthetic cover for McKian.“An alien, bug type thing is what I went for,” said Smith. After complications from an ankle injury in 2018, doctors decided a below-the-knee amputation would be the best option for McKian to ease his pain, but within a few months of that surgery, he faced another obstacle.McKian is one of the 27.5 million Americans uninsured and he cannot afford a new, properly-fitted socket, which is making his recovery difficult.“Phantom pains, neurological issues, blood flow issues, right now my stump is getting very cold to the touch,” said McKian.McKian plans to apply for coverage next year, but while he waits for that, Smith decided the prosthetic cover would be a unique way to deal in the meantime.“We took a tracing of his leg basically, and just made a cardboard cut out of the shape and then I laid that out, flat sculpted it all, then took a mold of it, and then cast it with that material,” said Smith.Smith finished it this month.“I felt like I was 12 again,” said McKian. “I loved it. It made me laugh instantly, I was like this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It keeps my mind off of the pain quite a bit, makes people laugh, they love seeing it.”Both men hope the creation not only raises awareness about limb loss but encourages people to treat everyone like their neighbor.“If you can take some of the good stuff that’s happened to you and pass that on to someone it doesn’t take anything away from you,” said Smith.“Lend a hand when people need a hand because there’s going to be a day when everyone needs a hand,” said McKian. This story was first reported by Marisa Oberle at WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan. 2326
