SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A growing group in San Diego is flipping the script on those who fight dense development in their own backyards.They're calling themselves the 'YIMBY' Democrats. YIMBY for "yes in my backyard." Their solution is for more dense development in urban areas where people can live and work. They also seek legislative reform and developments that help combat climate change."It's basic supply and demand," said member Dike Anyiwo. "The more sort of inventory that we're able to produce and build and create, then it stands to reason that prices should go down."RELATED: MISD: Granny flat permits soarTheir ideas appear to be gaining traction. The city recently passed Mayor Kevin Faulconer's plan eliminating parking requirements near transit centers. And the YIMBYs are getting visits from some key politicians, including Assemblyman Todd Gloria, City Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Ward, and County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. Plus, some of its members are now landing spots on city planning groups. Anyiwo is now on the Midway Pacific Highway Community Planning Group. Still, concerns remain that the YIMBY plans could lead to too much crowding for the city's infrastructure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A rental forecast out Wednesday predicts that San Diego County's affordable housing crisis will worsen through 2020. According to the University of Southern California Casden Economics Forecast, “even under the best case standard, few units in Southern California are affordable.”By 2020, the report forecasts that average monthly rents will increase by 9 in San Diego County, the highest among all Southern California areas.The report predicts that the San Diego will continue to see economic and population growth over the “foreseeable future” with the economy’s leading sectors continuing to draw a variety of workers.The forecast also shows San Diego’s popularity among older members of the population, including retirees.As a result, housing demand will continue in both the renter and owner-occupied markets, leading rents to increase as vacancy rates remain low.In 2020, the average rent is predicted to be ,187 with a 3.75 percent vacancy rate. 995

California roads ranked on the list as the 48th worst in the nation while the state took the 36th spot for premium increases after adding a teen driver to a policy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A large crowd held a rally against a reopening rollback and another indoor closure Tuesday.The rally took place outside the steps of the County Administration building around 4 pm.The County has been on the cusp of moving into the most restrictive tier in the Governor's safe reopening plan. If that happens, many businesses would be required to close their indoor operations.Many at the rally pushed for local control. They say local leaders should be able to call the shots to reopen their communities safely.County Board Vice-Chair Jim Desmond spoke at the rally.The Board held a special meeting and closed session Monday evening.Board Chairman Greg Cox released the following statement after the meeting:"Tonight, our Board of Supervisors met in a special closed session and discussed our legal options regarding the State's reopening criteria and the effect on local businesses and schools. The Board did not vote on any actions. We will continue to work with the State to make sure the metrics accurately reflect the underlying dynamics of the pandemic in San Diego County. The Board will meet again tomorrow at 3:00 pm to provide an update to the public." 1189

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man has made it his mission to lift up young people through sports. Gordon Brown is our LEAD San Diego Leadership Award winner for December. He’s a mentor for inner-city golfers, a sport often seen as a past-time for the 1 percent. “I played golf across the street from my house from where we lived, on the school ground. It was five of, three of us, that used one golf club,” said Brown. From those humble beginnings in South Carolina, Brown forged a career in professional golf that eventually led him to San Diego. In 1973, he started helping disadvantaged kids learn the game. "What golf teaches to the kids that we've raised through the San Diego inner City Junior Golf Foundation is honor, dignity respect, etiquette, and truly wanting to do something better with their lives.” Brown estimates he has worked with thousands of kids over the years. He may not remember them all, but they remember his patience, skill, and generosity through the San Diego Inner-City Junior Golf Foundation. 1032
