Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced late Friday that the US government will extend a federal student loan forbearance on borrowers for an additional month as more businesses are closing due to a surge in coronavirus cases. This means that payments of federal student loans will not be due in January.The decision does not impact private student loans, which have generally still required repayment by Americans during the pandemic.While the federal student loan forbearance is scheduled to end on January 31, President-elect Joe Biden has discussed taking more permanent action on reducing the student loan burden on millions of Americans.Federal student loans were placed on forbearance in March. In August, President Donald Trump directed DeVos to extend the forbearance through the end of 2020. While those who wanted to continue making student loan payments were able to continue doing so, automatic payments of federal student loans stopped early in the pandemic as unemployment levels jumped to record levels.Amid the forbearance period, the federal government was not charging interest on borrowers."The coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges for many students and borrowers, and this temporary pause in payments will help those who have been impacted," said DeVos. "The added time also allows Congress to do its job and determine what measures it believes are necessary and appropriate. Doctors and researchers have noticed that the coronavirus affects children differently. Now, there are questions about how accurate COVID-19 tests are in kids.One recent study done by several laboratories and hospitals in Massachusetts looked at the BinaxNOW rapid test.The test had a high accuracy rate in adults, but when it came to symptomatic patients 18 and under, the accuracy rate was just under 78%. The rate decreased in asymptomatic children.Another paper, published in Clinical Microbiology and Infection, found the Panbio rapid test had a lower accuracy rate in children. It was only able to identify 62% of COVID-19 cases in patients under 16 years old.Doctors have differing opinions on why accuracy rates may be different in children.One doctor tells Yahoo News that children's immune systems are just better at zeroing in on diseases and making them harder to detect.A pediatric doctor we spoke with says she hasn't seen a difference in accuracy rates. If anything, symptoms may be different.“Sometimes the way that the disease processes or goes about in these children can change. It can change with obesity rates and things like that, but we have had it be successful with infants age as well as on up,” said Laura-Anne Cleveland with the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children.There may also be some variation in the way the test is performed. The cotton swab is the same size for both adults and children, which means it could be more uncomfortable for kids.“Kids move around. If you have a little kid that you're trying to hold down, they're going to move around, and sometimes, we don't want to cause pain or cause tears, but you do have to get in that nose, do a couple turns, and be able to get a good sample,” said Cleveland.When children are tested, doctors say it may actually be a bad sign if they are comfortable during the test, because it may not produce an accurate result. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, called for the U.S. to "double down" on what he called "common-sense" public health measures on Monday as the country faces a critical juncture amid the COVID-19 pandemic.After enormous surges in cases in the spring and summer, the U.S. was able to flatten the curve a bit in early September. According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. dropped to a low point of about 34,000 new daily cases of COVID-19, down from a high of about 70,000 new cases in July.However, case rates have increased gradually in recent weeks, and Fauci warned that Americans need to take public health measures seriously as cold weather forces many indoors, adding that the country is "not in a good place" ahead of winter."(Some states) are starting to show upticks in cases and even some increase in hospitalizations in some states," Fauci said Monday during an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America. "You don't want to be in a position like that as the weather starts getting cold."Fauci added that despite the increase in cases, he did not believe the U.S. needed to go into another total lockdown similar to the one that took place in March and April."I would really like to not go there because it causes so many collateral issues and problems," Fauci said. "...obviously, if things really explode, you'd have to consider that. But we want to do everything we possibly can to avoid an absolute shutdown.
