BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong visited Chinese-American Nobel physics laureate Yang Chen-ning at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Friday.Friday is Yang's 88th birthday and Liu extended her congratulations to Yang and praised his years of efforts in promoting China's education.Yang had made important contributions in fostering young Chinese talent and promoting the country's educational development as well as academic exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States.His efforts were even more remarkable after 2003 when he returned and settled in China.Liu discussed with Yang about China's education reform and the Outline of the National Plan for Medium-and Long-term Educational Reform and Development.Education Minister Yuan Guiren accompanied Liu on the visit.

ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday made a five-point proposal on boosting ties with Greece during talks with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, stressing that China is willing to work with the European country to combat the lingering financial crisis.Wen arrived in Athens earlier in the day, starting a three-day official visit to the country, the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.Papandreou held a grand welcoming ceremony for Wen after the Chinese premier's arrival.Wen said both countries were great civilizations in the history and the people of the two countries have always been amicable to each other. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) - Members from friendship associations of China and Japan on Friday voiced their hope for people-to-people exchanges to help improve strained China-Japan relations after recent disputes.The proposal was launched at a conference held in the Great Hall of the People to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan-China Friendship Association (JCFA), a friendly group established on Oct. 1, 1950 with the view to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two peoples and promote bilateral exchanges and trade."Friendly groups should take the 60th anniversary as a new starting point to deepen friendly exchanges between the two countries, especially between the youth, and contribute to the China-Japan strategic relationship of reciprocity," said President of the China-Japan Friendship Association (CJFA) Song Jian. He also spoke highly of the contribution made by the JCFA for the development of China-Japan relations.People-to-people exchanges have always played an important role in the history of bilateral relations. It not only helped the two countries normalize ties but also improve the bilateral relations when they were strained by some issues such as the visits paid by former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro to the Yasukuni Shrine.Regarding the recent friction between the two countries caused by a ship collision, people-to-people exchanges were expected to play a role again.Two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided on Sept. 7 in the waters off the Diaoyu Islands. Japan's subsequent illegal detention of the Chinese trawler and crew members resulted in strong protests from the Chinese government and public. The crew and the boat were released after the Chinese side took some countermeasures."China and Japan are neighboring countries separated by only a thin strip of water. People of the two countries boast a 2000-year history of friendly exchanges. LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. Before the school was built, students, like nomads, had studied during the past two years in tents, then makeshift classrooms.Sitting in a wheelchair, Guo Dongmei looked at the bustling sports field where her schoolmates could not wait to try out the new sports equipment, such as the parallel bars.
