The illness caused Jade Phillips’ brain to swell, affecting her vision.The Center for Disease Control reported a total of 32 flu-related pediatric deaths this season, double compared to this time last year. Twenty-one were associated with Influenza B, and five of those were due to a specific strain called B/Victoria.Dr. Rao said this is the highest number they’ve seen this early in the flu season over the last 17 years.“Of those kids who are being hospitalized, they tend to have a more severe illness,” Dr. Rao said. “So we are seeing a lot more kids end up in the ICU this time of year compared to what we might be seeing in previous years.”It’s important to be aware -- especially in children and older adults -- because the type of flu is not always obvious.“You can’t really differentiate one type from the other in terms of how people are feeling,” Dr. Rao said.Both doctors say the flu shot can help. The CDC shows getting the vaccine can reduce your risk by 40 to 60 percent.“It certainly decreases the severity of the flu,” Dr. Feagins said. “So if you find yourself with the flu and you’ve had the vaccine, hopefully it will be less severe.”Getting the flu can worsen existing conditions, or cause other problems such as respiratory issues.The best way to prevent infection is to wash your hands, avoid contact with anyone that has the flu, keep your hands away from your face, and clean surfaces that may have come into contact with flu germs, the CDC advises. 2442

Sally Owens is one patient undergoing ketamine treatment. “You feel secure in and grounded, even though you're in a dream state,” Owens says of the treatment. “And in an hour, you come out of it and you're feeling better.” The retired nurse started getting IV ketamine treatments after fighting depression with antidepressants for most of her adult life, with no success. But after two sessions at Vitalitas, a Denver ketamine infusion center, she saw results. “I was doing more things around the house and getting out and and doing more things with friends,” she says. Owens says she’s excited to hear the FDA is considering a more accessible, less potent nasal spray similar to ketamine. “You could essentially think of esketamine as half of ketamine,” describes Dr. Roman Langston, who treats patients with ketamine. Esketamine would be for people with severe depression who haven't benefited from at least two different therapies, the doctor says. 300 million people around the world are affected by severe depression. Drug makers hope the spray can help 30 to 40 percent of patients, who don't respond to antidepressants. Antidepressants can take weeks to take effect, while they say nasal spray benefits start after four hours. Dr. Langston says FDA approval could make more people comfortable using the drug, commonly known as a party drug. Right now, it's not covered by insurance. A 14-year-old girl was killed and four others injured when falling rocks hit their car at the Glacier National Park in Montana.The rocks hit the top of the car Monday night and shattered the rear windshield. In addition to killing the girl, rocks also injured her parents and two other children in the vehicle, the park said in a statement.It estimated the rocks were between fist-sized and 12 inches in diameter along with enough debris from the rockfall to fill the bed of a pickup truck. The incident happened near the East Tunnel on the popular and mountainous Going-to-the-Sun Road.An ambulance that responded could not airlift the girl because of her unstable condition, the park said.Flight paramedics traveled with her using ground ambulance to Kalispell, Montana. She died while being transported to a local hospital, the park said."The two adults suffered significant bruises and were transported to area hospitals. The two other children in the vehicle had minor injuries and also went by ambulance to the hospital," the park said.The victims were visiting from Utah, and authorities will release their names once family notifications are complete. Going-to-the-Sun Road was closed briefly Monday night while crew cleared the rocks and a tow truck removed the vehicle.The last fatal injury from rockfall on the Going-to-the-Sun Road was in 1996 when a vehicle was struck, according to the park. 1417
