“Happened nine times in a five year period,” said Dawnie McNamee, a former hiring manager. Stood up. “We got to the point where we were actually surprised that someone would actually show up on their first day [because] it got to be so frequent,” said Craig Cummings, a former restaurant manager. No show. “You go home and you wonder, what did I miss about this person,” said McNamee Ghosted. We’re not talking about dates. People aren’t showing up to their first day of work. “It’s like dating, right? Well I had coffee with you, I don’t like you, I’m going to block you. And that’s kind of how you feel like if you’re a hiring manager,” said McNamee. McNamee is a former hiring manager and now works for a payroll company in Colorado. She says she sees this all the time. “What I found, especially since the stock market has recovered, and jobs now aren’t as rare as they used to be, is there’s a lot of people out there that’ll come in, nail it on the interview. You’ll go through the hiring process, all the paperwork and then their first day they will not show up.” She’s right. Unemployment is at 3.5 percent, the lowest it’s been since in 50 years. That means some employers can’t find someone to take a job. Searching for a new hire can be a little bit like dating, you never know exactly what you’re going to get, it’s expensive, and they may not even show up. I went to a job fair and asked people looking for work if they’d ever consider doing this to a potential employer. “If I had a job offer in hand that I’d accepted," said Julie Ziobro who's looking for a job. “Absolutely not,” said Nathaniel Diamond, a job seeker. I come from a generation, and I grew up, making phone calls, don’t text,” said Cummings. “I definitely wouldn’t do it without communicating; that’s not fair,” said Ziobro. “Just let them know, like, 'Hey, I got a job that better suits my skill set, and I’m going to take that one instead,'” said Joshua Curry, a job seeker.No one was ready to admit they’d leave an employer hanging out to dry. But it doesn’t mean there are no other signs. “We really want to take a look at their job history to look at, are they a job hopper? Are they moving around every three months or every six months with different companies. To me that would signal someone is always looking for that next best thing,” says Keely Teynor, who runs her own hiring firm. Teynor says there are a few things employers can do, including looking at someone’s job history. “Even in this really tight labor market, the unemployment rate is so low, we kind of have to find this nice balance of having multiple steps in the process to show they’re really invested and interested in this opportunity,” she says.She says that process helps her avoid the dreaded no show on an employee’s first day. McNamee can still remember the sting of being stood up. “People are excited to have new hires come in and be a part of your team," she says. "And so when you have people not show up, leaves a little mud on your face.“I’ve stayed awake quite a few nights wondering about that what could I have done better.” 3127

INDIANAPOLIS — A homeless man was rescued from the back of a garbage truck near Indianapolis early Thursday.According to a report from the Decatur Township Fire Department, rescue crews were called shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday for an injured person.When they arrived, firefighters found an injured person inside the back of a garbage truck.Firefighters said the driver of the trash truck told them he had made two previous stops along Kentucky Avenue, reached his third stop and started the compactor without knowing someone was in the back. The driver told firefighters he heard a man yelling and immediately stopped the compactor and called 911.Firefighters said the man was extricated from the back of the garbage truck within 30 minutes and was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.According to firefighters, the man in the back of the garbage truck told rescue crews he was in the dumpster to stay warm because he was homeless. CHICAGO, Ill. – The fight against domestic violence has found a new warrior in a surprising place – the hair salon. And now, more and more states are looking to stylists to spot the signs of victimization. For Joan Rowan, who has been in the salon business for 44 years, the bond between hair stylist and client is strong. “It's a very intimate relationship,” said Rowan. Over the years, she says she’s heard the intimations many times before. “’He'd kill me if he knew how much money I spent. No, you can't cut my hair too short. My husband doesn't like it.’ Those kinds of answers. Suddenly you're asking them like are you OK?” It’s those in-chair conversations that drove her 20 years ago to start training her own staff to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. “They all knew stories and heard it all before. They had had clients who came bruised or hair missing,” said Rowan. Many clients she said appeared sad or afraid. In 2017, Illinois became the first state to require all cosmetologists and salon professionals to complete a one-hour, one-time education course on how to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. They look for evidence of physical abuse like bruises and cuts or outward behaviors like self-blame, sudden lifestyle changes, and irregular appointments. The law, which went into effect this year, impacted more than 84,000 licensed cosmetologists and estheticians in the state. “We are not trained as reporters or anything like that,” explained Rowan. “All we do is give them a phone number that they can call if they need help.” According to the Professional Beauty Association, Illinois, Arkansas and California, have already passed laws mandating domestic abuse training for cosmetology school students or current salon professionals. Since last year, another six including, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have attempted to pass similar legislation. For salon owner Susanne Post, it’s personal. “Part of my story is that I’m a survivor of domestic violence myself,” said Post. Two years ago, she helped create a domestic violence training program for Nashville stylists. She says she’s hopeful that her home state of Tennessee will pass a law similar to other states. "In Tennessee, we are the fifth in the nation at the rate that women are killed by men, which is just unbelievable,” she said. “It affects one in four women, and one in seven men.” Joan Rowan says she’s proud to have been part of genesis of the training and the laws that are now spreading to help protect both men and women. “It has saved lives,” Rowan said. “It's real. And it doesn't have to be. And we can all help people get out of trouble.” 2725

The lockdown due to COVID-19 not only took an economic toll on the business, but it also left Johnny bored, looking for somewhere to focus his energy. All told, he said he buried around million worth of treasure. And all of the treasure is up for grabs - for those who buy a ticket to Johnny's Adventure Quest, which starts officially on Aug. 1.Aside from a lot of fun, there's one thing Johnny wants people to get out of this massive treasure hunt. "Memories. Life is made of memories and that was our slogan here all these years," he said. Each treasure has a GPS tracker, so Johnny will know if they've moved. Once found, you can keep the treasure or sell it back to Johnny. Some of the treasure is 150 years old – precious inventory passed down from his father. "He would think I’m nuts," Johnny said.
