BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani."Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well.He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high.Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China.Kayani also met with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.During the meeting with Meng Jianzhu, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in law enforcement and security.Hailing results achieved in the two fields, Meng pointed out Pakistan's active efforts in cooperating with China, including in anti-terrorism. He said he believed that the China-Pakistan cooperation in law enforcement and security would continue to develop with the joint efforts from both sides.Kayani echoed Meng saying the Pakistani government and its armed forces attached much importance to the strategic cooperation with China, and the government would further enhance it.During a meeting with Guo Boxiong, the senior officer of the People's Liberation Army of China stressed the importance of strategic communication between China and Pakistan.Guo said the all-weather friendship between the two countries has endured major international challenges. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Economic data for May released Friday showed that China was eyeing rising inflation and slowing economic growth, indicative of what the "the most complicated year" meant for the country's economy.Experts said the mixed bag of economic data would make it difficult for China's policymakers in the coming months.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose in May to 3.1 percent, the highest since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Friday.The NBS also reported that growth of industrial value-added output slowed to 16.5 percent in May from 17.8 percent in April.Urban fixed assets investment for the first five months rose 25.9 percent year on year, 0.2 percentage points down from the first four months.INFLATION QUICKENSThe 3.1 percent CPI growth was up 0.3 percentage points from April's rise of 2.8 percent. In the first five months, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.The May figure exceeded the government's year-average target of 3 percent set in March.The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year in May, up 0.3 percentage points from April's 6.8 percent.In May, the CPI in China's urban areas increased 2.9 percent and in rural regions by 3.3 percent. Food prices, which accounted for about a third of the weighting in calculating the CPI, rose 6.1 percent.
BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China has evacuated 1,299 nationals from Kyrgyzstan where ethnic clashes have left at least 187 people dead, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.The last chartered flight of China Southern Airlines, with 148 Chinese nationals aboard, landed at an airport in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at 1:30 a.m. (Beijing time) Thursday from Osh in southern Kyrgyzstan.The return of the ninth chartered flight means the end of the three-day massive evacuation, which started on Tuesday.Chinese nationals walk out of the air bridge after another chartered plane carrying 191 Chinese nationals stranded in the violence-hit Kyrgyz city of Osh lands in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, June 16, 2010."After three days of efforts, the vast majority of Chinese nationals in Osh have been flown home," said Sun Dali, deputy director of the Department of Consular Affairs with the Foreign Ministry."But we will continue to pay attention to and contact the Chinese nationals who are still staying in Kyrgyzstan, and offer immediate assistance to them in light of the changes of the local situation," he added.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said Wednesday that it has begun work on the reconstruction plan for the mudslide-flattened Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province.An inspection team would be sent to the disaster-ravaged areas to gather information for drawing up the reconstruction plan, the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.However, it did not elaborate on the reconstruction plan nor provide detailed information about the inspection team.On the same day, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged authorities to prepare for post-disaster reconstruction of the mudslide-hit regions.He said the responsible authorities must promptly send competent teams to the disaster sites to assess losses so reconstruction plans can be developed on the basis of these findings.The death toll from the massive mudslides in Zhouqu, beginning on Aug. 8, had risen to 1,287 as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, with 457 still missing, the local disaster relief headquarters said.
