BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday urged all the members of the Communist Party of China(CPC) to put people's interests first and learn the bitter lessons from the latest security incidents.     Addressing the opening ceremony of a seminar for the country's ministerial-level leaders in Beijing, Hu, also the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said that the major accidents on work and food safety which occurred in some places of the country this year had incurred severe losses of people's lives and property.     These accidents had indicated that some leaders lacked a sense of responsibility and had a loose governance, he said.     These accidents also showed some of the leaders paid no attention to people's problems and complaints and were insensitiveto the problems which threats people's life security, said Hu.     He urged all the leaders to fully understand the serious consequences of the accidents and learn the bitter lessons from the accidents.     Those accidents reminded us once again that only by solving the problems emerged from the Party leaders ... and putting people's interests first, could the Party better lead the people towards the building of a well-off society, Hu said.     The President also urged more efforts from the leaders to realize and safeguard the fundamental interests of the people.     Leaders should strive hard to do practical and good things for the people and ensure that people benefits from the country's developing economy, he noted.     More efforts should be made to mobilize people to be involved in the cause of the country's scientific development, and leaders should collect people's ideas and listen to their opinions in the process, he said.

VIENTIANE, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here on Saturday evening, starting his working visit to Laos.     Wen is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries -- China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar -- to be convened in this Laos capital city on Monday.     According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wen, invited by Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, will meet with Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone and hold talks with his Lao counterpart Bouasone on future bilateral cooperation.     Wen and Bouasone are scheduled to attend the signing ceremony of cooperation agreement in the sectors of economy, technology, coal and e-governance. With a long history of cultural and economic exchanges among the nations, the area has formed peculiar cultural and economic characteristics based on different folk customs and natural landscapes of the six nations sharing the river.     The first GMS Summit was held in Cambodia's Phnom Penh in 2002,and the second in southwest China's Kunming in 2005. 

SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang had a full schedule on Saturday afternoon as he spent time in north Hebei Province visiting infant patients stricken by tainted milk powder, talking to doctors, dairy farmers and salesman in a local supermarket.     In Dingxing County Hospital of Hebei Province, he went to the infants ward where he talked to parents and inquired about the symptoms and progress of the patients' illness. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is. The formula has so far killed four infants.     Dairy giant Sanlu based in the Hebei provincial capital of Shijiazhuang was the first company exposed in the scandal.

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.     The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m.. A major eathquake measuring 7.8 on Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. on Monday.Of the killed, 8,993 were in Sichuan, 132 in Gansu, 85 in Shaanxi, eight in Chongqing and one in Yunnan, the ministry said.     The quake jolted Wenchuan County of Sichuan at 2:28 p.m. Monday, which also leveled some 500,000 rooms in the affected areas.     To cope with the catastrophe, the State Disaster Relief Commission and the Civil Affairs Ministry immediately initiated a "Level II emergency response plan" on Monday afternoon, and upgraded it to level I in the evening, the ministry said.     According to China's regulations, natural disasters in the country are classified into four categories based on their severity. The Level I emergency plan covers the most serious class of natural disasters.     A disaster relief work group of the State Council, China's Cabinet, rushed to the quake-hit county of Wenchuan on Monday evening to coordinate the rescue and relief work.     Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.     In central China's Hubei Province, the hailstorms attacked 10 counties, affecting 515,000 people, collapsing 85 rooms of 33 households and damaging another 4,761 rooms as of 11 a.m. Monday. The direct economic loss was estimated at 385 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars).     Hailstorms also lashed three counties of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday, affecting 92,100 locals and resulting in a direct economic loss of 7.65 million yuan.     In east China's Jiangsu Province, 24,000 people also suffered from strong winds and hails Sunday evening. CHENGDU, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Saturday night expressed gratitude to foreign countries and people who have offered aid since a major earthquake struck the country.     "On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Council and the Central Military Commission, I express heartfelt thanks to the foreign governments and international friends that have contributed to our quake-relief work," Hu said. Chinese President Hu Jintao Saturday night speaks at a meeting on rescue and relief work of the earthquake, expressing gratitudes to foreign countries and people who have offered aid since a major earthquake struck the country.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting on rescue and relief work after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake ravaged southwestern Sichuan Province Monday afternoon.     Hu also conveyed his greetings to the government officials and people in the disaster-hit areas, the People's Liberation Army (PLA), armed police, militia, reservists, public security staff, medical personnel, journalists and all people making "selfless devotions" to the quake-devastated areas.     More than 200 rescuers from Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Singapore are in Sichuan to help with the rescue and disaster relief work.     A 61-year-old woman was saved alive Saturday evening by Russian rescuers after being buried for up to 127 hours in the rubble, the first survivor found by foreign rescuers.     The earthquake, the worst in decades, had caused 28,881 deaths nationwide as of 2 p.m. Saturday. Many countries have offered help including making donations and sending rescue teams.     QUAKE RELIEF ATOP GOVERNMENT WORK AGENDA     In the meeting, Hu urged local governments at all levels and relevant central government departments to take quake relief as the most important and pressing issue in their work.     He called for unremitting efforts to search for and rescue the trapped people though more than five days had passed after the disaster.     "We should put people first and saving people's lives is still the top priority of the relief work," he said.     Troops, armed police, and public security personnel should reach villages and search every collapsed buildings to save the people, he said.     Hu also called for all-out efforts to save and cure injured survivors, urging to transfer them to hospitals with better conditions.     Hygiene measures in the quake-hit areas should be beefed up to prevent the spread of diseases, and more medical experts should be sent to these areas to help prevent and control possible epidemics, Hu said.     During the meeting, Hu expressed his concern for the people in the quake-devastated areas, calling for arrangements of supplies of daily necessities to meet people's demands.     Food, clothes, drinking water and temporary shelters must be ensured, he emphasized.     Hu also underscored social stability in quake hit areas, ordering officials to give considerate comfort and condolence to people to ensure a peaceful social environment.     "We must keep highly alert" against aftershocks and avoid further losses, he warned.     Hu also called for tightened monitoring and prevention measures on geological disasters such as landslides and mud-rock flows.     He said early planning is important for reconstruction as the country now faces a challenging task in this regard.     He also ordered early preparations and arrangements to deal with the issues of orphans, seniors and disabled.     The meeting was presided over by Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who urged implementation of the overall quake-relief strategies of the central government.
