SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House insisted Thursday that the CDC and the public will continue to have access to hospital data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, trying to quell concerns after the Trump administration directed a private technology firm to collect hospital data instead of the nation’s premier public health agency.Since March, the CDC has been collecting data from hospitals on bed space, COVID tests and other key metrics, like the availability of personal protective equipment, ventilators, and certain drugs.White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday the CDC-run system, the National Healthcare Safety Network, was only capturing 81 percent of the nation’s hospitals.She said the new system, run by TeleTracking Technologies, will provide a more complete picture with faster reporting to the White House Coronavirus Task Force. In some cases, hospitals manually input information to the federal database. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees on Thursday responded to a scathing audit that alleged evidence of fraud or misappropriation of funds leading to a multi-million dollar deficit.In their response to the audit, the district’s Board of Trustees acknowledged the importance of an independent state agency’s audit and said they “intend to cooperate fully with these agencies should they require additional information.”“We acknowledge that, as required, you notified the local district attorney, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and State Controller that the FCMAT AB 139 report found there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that fraud, misappropriation of funds, or other illegal fiscal activities may have occurred," the Board of Trustees said."We understand the importance of having these agencies review the report and intend to cooperate fully with these agencies should they require additional information," said the board.The 79-page audit, conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT), was made public June 22. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District is releasing an update on the next phases of its plan to reopen schools for in-person learning.The current plan to begin Phase Two for elementary school students is after the winter break on Jan. 4, said SDUSD Board President John Lee Evans.Middle and high Schools will start Jan. 25, at the beginning of the third academic quarter, said Evans.Elementary students will be divided between morning and afternoon sessions to allow for social distancing in the classroom. Middle and high school students will attend in person sessions, two days per week.All families will have the option to continue distance learning, said Evans."What can throw this plan off track? There are two main factors," said Evans.
