GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of actor Eddie Hassell during a random robbery at a suburban Dallas apartment complex parking lot over the weekend. Grand Prairie police say D'jon Antone was arrested on a capital murder charge Wednesday at his home in Dallas. Hassell was known for his roles in the NBC show "Surface" and the 2010 film "The Kids Are All Right." Police have said 30-year-old Hassell, who lived in Waco, was fatally shot around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday in Grand Prairie.Police said when they arrived at the scene, they located Hassell, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. First aid was rendered as the Waco resident was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 773
From making snow angels to picking snowball fights with your friends, playing in the snow can be a lot of fun.But one Colorado town didn't think so. In Severance, a town about 60 miles north of Denver, it's long been illegal to throw snowballs.Dane Best, 9, thought the law was "silly." The young town resident might have even broken it once in a while.So with the help of his classmates, Best decided to take it upon himself to change the law. He collected letters and signatures in support of snowball fights, did some research and presented his case at a Severance Town Council meeting on Monday."It is an outdated law," Best told council members, according to CNN affiliate KCNC. "And I want to throw a snowball without getting in trouble."Now he can, after the council unanimously approved a measure to legalize throwing snowballs within town limits.Mayor Don McLeod told CNN that the law was part of a more elaborate ordinance, Sec. 10-5-80, that said, "It is unlawful for any person to throw or shoot any stone or any other missile upon or at any person, animal, building, tree or other public or private property; or at or against any vehicle or equipment design for the transportation of persons or property."When Dane and his classmates visited town hall this fall on a field trip, McLeod pointed out that the law -- although it's not enforced -- would include throwing snowballs at people."The kids were super intrigued when they found out they have been breaking the law this whole time," the mayor told CNN."Every year when the kiddos come to town hall, I point out little laws we have, and I challenge these third-graders to change them. Dane was the first student to take me up on this, and I'm very proud that he did."After winning his argument, Dane was given the town's first legal snowball to throw in celebration. His parents couldn't be more excited."We are proud of him for taking initiative to make some change, no matter how small it may be," Derrick Best, Dane's father, told KCNC. CNN has reached out to Dane's parents for further comment.As for Dane's next challenge? According to KCNC, another current town law allows a maximum of three pets per household and only includes cats and dogs. Homeowners in City Heights say the neighborhood isn't keeping up with the cost of living. While home prices are on the rise, development plans have come to a halt. Paul Smith is trying to transform City Heights. "They're still equating it to a high crime area or a place not worth investing in," said Smith. Like everywhere else in San Diego, the cost of living there is going up. "People are taking advantage of a housing shortage right now," said Smith. "So they can demand top dollar for their house. Because someone's willing to pay for it."He's been remodeling his home for the past 18 months. Many of his neighbors are doing the same. "We're seeing numbers in the 0's range now, 0, and I'd say probably five years ago you could buy a house for under 0,000."But, he says businesses in the area aren't adapting to the change. "It's constantly having to go over to North Park to look for services or South Park, outside the community."While some shops are moving in, he says it's simply not enough. "New businesses are seeming to move in, but there isn't a massive influx of investments like you're seeing in North Park and other areas," said Smith. "So we're seeing a lot of vacancies here."Those businesses would help build an even stronger community. "I don't always want to have to leave my neighborhood and to another area just to go get groceries, or go to a restaurant to eat," said Smith. For him, it can't come soon enough. "Change kind of is coming, but more needs to happen."The city did work on a redevelopment project in City Heights several years ago.
