The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning that the number of online puppy scams has risen sharply in 2020. The rise in scams comes as more families seek to adopt pets to ease the loneliness, tension or boredom associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.Scammers are taking advantage of the rising demand by tricking would-be pet owners into paying hundreds of dollars or more to purchase animals that ultimately don’t exist.The BBB says its Scam Tracker has received nearly 4,000 reports of pet fraud so far this year and the bureau projects it will receive about 4,300 reports by the end of 2020, amounting to approximately .1 million in losses. Last year, there were only 1,870 pet scams reported, amounting to just over million.The BBB says it started to see this spike in scams when the pandemic hit the U.S. in the spring. Accordingly, there were more reports in April than in the first three months of the year combined. This trend is continuing into the holiday season as well. The BBB says it received 337 complaints about puppy scams in 2020, which is a dramatic increase from 77 for the same month in 2019.The median loss reported to Scam Tracker this year is 0 and victims between 35 and 55 accounted for half of the reports.With scammers evolving their tactics during these difficult times, the BBB says consumers should exercise extreme caution when shopping for pets online.Data from the Scam Tracker shows that mobile payment apps like Zelle and CashApp are often being used now, whereas Western Union or MoneyGram wire transfers were popular payment methods documented in a 2017 study. Also, the BBB says pet scammers now commonly use online advertising tools, like sponsored links to boost their fraudulent listings in search results.Additionally, the pandemic has given scammers a new tool in their arsenal. Reports show many fraudsters are telling victims they cannot meet the animals before sending money because of COVID-19. To combat this, experts recommend using video conferencing to meet the animal and owner virtually before buying.Scammers have also made COVID-19-related money requests for items such as climate-controlled crates, insurance and non-existent COVID-19 vaccines.Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO, says knowing the red flags associated with these pet scams can help consumers avoid heartache and losing their money.The BBB recommends the following when buying pets online:See the pet in person before paying any money. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, consider a video call with the seller so you can see the seller and the actual pet for sale. Since scammers are not likely to comply with the request, this may help avoid a scam.Do a reverse image search of the photo of the pet and search for a distinctive phrase in the description.Do research to get a sense of a fair price for the breed you are considering. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — New unredacted court documents reveal Aaron Glee Jr., who is accused in the murder of Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau and Vicki Sims, confessed to killing the young activist and community volunteer.The documents also detail how Sims and Glee knew each other and how all three of them briefly met on June 6.Probable cause documents state that when officers responded to Glee's home in the 2100 block of Monday Road on June 13, they found Vicki Sims' car stuck in the mud outside of the home. They say a sheet was placed over the back of the Toyota and the license plate was bent up, hiding the license plate number.When they went inside, they found 75-year-old Vicki Sims' body. Investigators say her arms and feet were tied up behind her.As they continued searching Glee's home, they found 19-year-old Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau's body. Documents say her body appeared to be "purposely" covered with leaves and other vegetation.According to documents, when officers spoke to Sims' family prior to the discovery of her body, they said that Sims "often prepared meals for 'Aaron'" and delivered them to his home."It was reported that 'Aaron,' who did not own his own vehicle, often obtained transportation from Sims," probable cause documents read.As police continued investigating, they learned that, about two hours before the bodies were discovered, Glee had bought a bus ticket to West Palm Beach. On June 14, Glee was detained by the Orlando Police Department at a Greyhound station.After complaining about having trouble breathing, Glee was taken to the hospital. That's where documents say he voluntarily confessed to the murders; once to officers who were guarding him and again to his mother in a phone call.When TPD officers interviewed him, Glee confessed to kidnapping and murdering Salau and Sims on different dates.Glee said that on June 6, he was at a bus stop on Apalachee Parkway when he met Salau. He said they talked for about an hour.During that time, he said Salau told him that she had been recently sexually assaulted and didn't have a permanent place to stay. After that, Glee agreed to go with Salau to his home so she could bathe and rest."Glee stated that he then placed a telephone call to Sims, and that she came and picked he and Salau up in her Toyota," documents read. According to investigators, Glee's story was corroborated by surveillance video.After Sims dropped them off, Glee said she left and Salau went inside the home to take a shower. After Salau got out of the shower, Glee said he "attempted to engage her in sexual activity."He told officers that Salau physically resisted him, biting him on the arm."Glee said he physically overpowered Salau... He was asked if he would characterize his actions as rape," investigators wrote in the documents. "Glee responded in the affirmative."Glee said that he then kept Salau inside the home for approximately three to five days. He told officers that he was heavily under the influence of alcohol during that time, so he was unsure exactly how much time had passed."Glee stated that he was aware he would be arrested and likely sentenced to prison if he allowed Salau to leave the residence," documents read. "Glee indicated he determined that his only course of action was to end her life."So, Glee said he tied her up in a way that made it difficult for her to breathe.Based on the evidence and Glee's confession, officers found probable cause to charge him with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of murder (second degree murder and premeditated murder), and one count of sexual assault.During a court appearance on Saturday, a judge ruled that Glee will be held in jail without bond.This story was originally published by staff at WTXL. 3747

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A Terre Haute police officer who died following an exchange of gunfire with a homicide suspect Friday night has been identified as Patrolman Rob Pitts, a 16-year veteran of the force.Pitts and three other officers with the Terre Haute Police Department were looking for a potential homicide suspect Friday afternoon at the Garden Quarter apartment complex.State police say the suspect started shooting at the officers from the second floor of an apartment building and the officers returned fire. Patrolman Pitts was wounded and later died at Terre Haute Regional hospital.The suspect was located around 9:15 p.m. when members of the Terre Haute Police Department SWAT team entered the apartment building.He also died from his wounds.
