There's a lot of excitement about the joy the holidays can bring, particularly this year. But at the same time, many families, especially those with fragile loved ones, may be experiencing stress and sadness.“It's the first time in my life that I have not been with any of my family members. And so that's really difficult and tricky for us,” said Amy Goyer, a family and caregiving expert with AARP.Goyer isn’t alone. More than three quarters of caregivers are making alternative plans this holiday season because of the pandemic.Goyer says to avoid all or nothing thinking. Instead, focus on traditions most important to your loved ones.“For one family member, the decorations are the most important part, for another one, it’s the family movie night,” she said. “It might be that the meals are the most important thing. The music, you know, the religious services. Find out what's most important and try to prioritize ways that you can adapt.”For loved ones outside the home, increase how often you talk to them. Decorate outside their window or mail them decorations. Do holiday traditions like reading a story, watching a movie or sharing Christmas morning coffee over video.“I know one caregiver who got a bunch of greeting cards and she addressed them all from different people and gave them to the facility and they're giving them to her brother who lives in a memory care facility,” said Goyer. “Every day he gets a card and that makes him feel like, oh, this is, this is the queue. This is the holiday season, and somebody cares about me.”Caregivers also need to pay attention to themselves. Well over half are already experiencing negative impacts on their mental health.“Remember to give to yourself and that that's a good thing to do. In fact, it's required. It's not optional. Because that's how we continue to have within what we need to give to others,” said Goyer. 1889

This is typically one of the most exciting times of the year, with high school football getting close to kicking off the season.Unfortunately, COVID-19 sidelined football and a bunch of other sports."It's a concern," says Caledonia, Michigan, clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole Beurkens, "because surveys throughout this pandemic have shown that student-athletes, in particular, are showing rates of anxiety and depression that are steadily increasing and rates of physical activity that are decreasing."It's a combination that Dr. Beurkens says can cause some serious problems."People often underestimate how connected those two things are," she says, "But the research shows us over and over again that getting some form of physical movement, physical activity, or exercise in on a daily basis is critical for supporting our mental health, and that's especially true for children and for teens."So, with many sports in a timeout, Dr. Beurkens says parents should be looking for signs of mental health issues."I think that if parents start to notice that their child is withdrawing more and more, not participating in things that they used to participate in, withdrawing more from the family, getting a lot more irritable, maybe feeling more anxious about things, expressing more hesitation to do things that they were comfortable doing, those are signs that anxiety or depression may be an issue."She says keeping your kids active during this time is invaluable."For kids still to be involved in physical activities around weight training practice, many of the schools are working on how to safely have kids together to continue to participate in drill training, in working on things that they work during the season, even though they won't be competing. That's a great way to provide not only structure but also those relational kinds of opportunities."And above all else, Dr. Beurkens says, keep talking."Open communication is one of the things that really helps kids to work through this types of challenging situations. Now, one group hopes to find parents for these children and using a new PSA to get attention.Isaiah lived in a foster home until he was 16 years old. Then, his social worker introduced him to Amy Arnston and her family."I knew I wanted to be part of their family as soon as I went there that weekend," Isaiah says.The couple had him over for Thanksgiving."They were pretty funny and outgoing people, so I got pretty comfortable with them after a while."A seat at that table turned into forever."I couldn't imagine not having my parents and my family in my life right now,” says Isaiah.However, many children Isaiah's age aren't so lucky.That's why AdoptUSKids is out with new PSAs, showing impactful moments of teenagers’ lives.
