SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up for a prayer vigil Wednesday night, organized by the Broadway Heights Community Council. The Prayer Vigil for Love, Peace and Justice was outdoors on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A dozen faith leaders participated, each taking a moment to speak to the crowd and then share prayer with the crowd. Organizers say they put this together in response to the racial injustice around the country, mentioning the death of George Floyd and the arrest of Amaurie Johnson at the trolley station in La Mesa. The vigil was peaceful and organizers say that was the goal. Families that attended the event and faith leaders say they are hopeful that coming together will lead to meaningful change and healing. 740

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said.
