LOUISVILLE, Colo. — It's been five months since Jonas Asner's last trip home to Colorado. This visit has an important purpose."I had to fly home to vote," Asner said.Asner's parents, Chris and Lisa Hall, sent his ballot to North Carolina on Oct. 14, where Jonas goes to school. His father, Chris Hall, purchased priority mail through USPS. The ballot was supposed to arrive in two to three days. However, the deadline kept creeping closer and closer with no sign of the envelope.Fearing it wouldn't show up on time, the family was determined to get his vote in."It just became very clear that there was only one way our child was going to be able to vote and that is if you came here to vote," said Asner's mother, Lisa Hall.Asner flew from North Carolina to Colorado Sunday night, voted Monday, and flew fly back Tuesday morning."It was definitely cool to vote in my first presidential elections as a milestone in my life," Asner said.Asner says his parents emphasized the importance of voting."To be able to have a voice in my country is really important to me," Asner said.Editor's note: This story was produced with the help of tips reported through ProPublica's Electionland project. (AP) — Authorities were investigating a report of a body found within the burn zone of a huge wildfire in Southern California, but the coroner's office was unable to confirm Wednesday whether it was burned.Two deaths were previously linked to the weeklong blaze in Ventura and Los Angeles counties that was 52 percent contained after scorching more than 152 square miles (394 square kilometers), engulfing homes, scenic canyon getaways and celebrity estates.The body under investigation was found in a burned residence in the Agoura Hills area. MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida police officer’s wife died after becoming trapped in the back of his patrol vehicle for several hours during a hot afternoon. Investigators are treating the death of 56-year-old Clara Paulino as an accident. She died Friday afternoon while her 58-year-old husband Aristides Paulino was sleeping in their Miami Shores home after finishing a midnight shift. The Miami Herald reports Paulino woke up around 5 p.m. and started looking for his wife, finding her cell phone on the back patio. He and one of his sons found Clara in the vehicle. Officials say she had climbed into the backseat of his marked SUV to find something when the doors somehow closed, and a self-locking mechanism engaged. The vehicle has a partition between the back seat and front seat, meaning Clara could not reach the horn. “It’s literally a cage,” one Miami police officer familiar with the vehicle told the Miami Herald.Temperatures reached over 90 degrees as she spent about four hours in the vehicle. 1037

MIAMI, Fla. — Tropical Storm Laura has strengthened near Puerto Rico, the National Hurricane Center said.As of the 5 p.m. update, Laura is about 100 miles west of Ponce, Puerto Rico, according to NHC. MANHATTAN, N.Y. — Workers installed 192 new glittering Waterford crystal triangles on Times Square's New Year's Eve ball on Sunday in preparation for a pandemic-limited celebration on Thursday.The ball is a 12-foot-diameter geodesic sphere covered with more than 2,000 crystal triangles of various sizes. Some new crystals are swapped in every year. This year's addition features a new “Gift of Happiness” design represented by a sunburst of bright cuts radiating outward. The ball, blazing with more than 32,000 LED lights, will be dropped at 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve to ring in 2021.The Times Square celebration will be much smaller than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic.
