FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A worldwide pandemic is a very serious thing but coping with it is often done with humor and laughter. Just ask a family in Fallbrook that’s created a new card game they call, "It's Contagious," featuring a not-so-serious side of dealing with the virus while allowing players to work through their anxiety."Folks will find that the artwork on the cards is really relatable," said mom, Lola Pickett. "And also just like a fun take on this very challenging situation that we’re all in."For Lola, her husband, Tigre, and their two children, the pandemic came very close to home in March when the kids' Grandfather, Rich Pickett, tested positive for COVID-19."His case ended up becoming quite severe, putting him into the ICU," Lola said.Lola says while her father-in-law was in the hospital and the family was quarantined. They coped while at home by spending time together and playing games together. But the stress of the pandemic and its very personal impact was never far off."We noticed our kids were processing things by like adding hand washing stations to their Lego builds," said Lola. "We thought, that’s how we do things as humans. We play through it and figure out how we’re feeling."With that in mind, a project was launched.Dad, Tigre Pickett, says the family found some old poker cards, "Lola took a Sharpie and whiteout and started marking them up. We were like what if we had this card that did this?"Virus cards, spreaders, and antibodies. The headlines and stories of 2020 were becoming the cards of “It’s Contagious!” Like the café in Germany that required patrons to wear pool noodle hats for social distancing."We thought, well, there’s a card. That’s hilarious," said Lola as she and her husband showed off various cards. "So, we have things like that. We have home haircut. We have the t-p shortage which we’re going through again." "Like Zoom birthday parties," Tigre pipes in, as Lola continues, "And then things like antibodies become superheroes. They become a superpower card in the deck just like they do in real life."And the game itself becoming a part of real-life as the Picketts have invested in professional artwork and production in the hope that “It’s contagious,” catches on."We found that play is one of the fastest ways for processing," said Tigre. (KGTV) -- Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman accused of stealing identities.On February 26, Deputies were contacted by a resident in Encinitas who said someone stole her identity and tried to withdraw money from her bank account.Authorities say the suspect also applied for and received credit cards in the victim’s name and made charges on the fraudulent accounts.Detectives later discovered that the same suspect also stole identities of several other people throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties.Anyone with information is asked to call the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station at 760-966-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest. 789
ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - City leaders in Encinitas plan to ban gas-powered leaf blowers to help curb the effects of climate change.They're hosting a public meeting about the ban Monday night, May 13, at 6 p.m. at the Encinitas Community Center (1140 Oakcrest Park Drive).The ban is part of the City's bigger Climate Action Plan, which the City Council approved in January of 2018. It calls for a 41 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 when compared to 2012 baseline levels.The plan says removing emissions from gas-powered leaf blowers would remove 142 Metric Tons of CO2 by 2030. That's the equivalent of taking roughly 25 cars off the road.While it's not a huge improvement, people in Encinitas say every small step will help."I think they ought to be eliminated everywhere," says David Winkler, who goes to Encinitas to meet friends. "The less reliance on fossil fuels, the better.""People come from all over the world here, so we should make it as clean and beautiful as we can," says Encinitas resident Linda, who declined to give her last name. "Anything we can do to lessen pollution is always a good thing."Other North County cities already have bans in place. Solana Beach and Del Mar both prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers.City leaders in Encinitas say their rule is different because it bases the ban on environmental concerns, rather than noise pollution.The ban only covers two-stroke leaf blowers. Other gas-powered tools like weed whackers and chain saws will still be allowed.If the ban is approved, it will take effect immediately for all city-run operations. After three months, any business licensed to operate in Encinitas will have to comply. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- It's official, a revamp is coming to the Escondido Country Club. The Escondido City Council voted 3-2 Wednesday night. This means they will move forward with "The Villages" development on the 109 acres of former Escondido Country Club land.The country club was closed years ago when purchased by a new owner with plans to build 380 homes. FALLBROOK (KGTV) -- A couple looking to buy a home in the North County wants to share an experience they're describing as negative as the new solar energy law goes into effect in 2020.The law requires that homes built in California starting in 2020 must have solar panels. It has caused confusion among potential homebuyers, like Brian and Carmen McKay. They recently left Las Vegas, looking to move back to San Diego County.“I used to work at Fallbrook skilled nursing many years ago,” said Carmen McKay. The couple found a home they liked in the Horse Creek Ridge development, a new housing project in Fallbrook.“When we realized it was a corner lot… oh my gosh, we loved it,” Carmen said.They were told the cost was roughly 5,000—which sounded like a reasonable price for San Diego, according to the McKays. That is when they say they got a surprise from the sales representative.“Then she says, by the way, once we were sold on the house and the price… there’s solar panels on the house. You have the option to lease it or buy it. And we’re like, why?” Carmen said.They said during the home tour, solar panels were not mentioned at all. Carmen said the sales representative only mentioned it when they were back in the office, ready to sign documents to buy the home. As the McKays were questioning solar, they were told “it’s required by the state.” That is only partially true. A spokesperson for the California Energy Commission told Team 10 that “the law only applies to homes that have been permitted after Jan. 1, 2020.”“If that’s not the case with the home in question that you mentioned, then the mandate does not apply,” wrote energy commission spokesperson Edward Ortiz.The McKays were told it would be about ,000 extra to buy the solar panels.“I think that it was misleading because we were buying a house that we were told it was 5, but it’s actually 5 or we’re paying a higher monthly out of pocket,” said Brian McKay.The seller knew they were on a time crunch.“We sold our property [in Nevada]. We’re at an AirBnB… we need to buy,” Carmen added.Nobody at the sales offices at Horse Creek Ridge would comment. Team 10 was directed to public relations. Through email, the spokesperson said:“Two separate state energy requirements guide D.R. Horton in its decisions regarding home design options in the state of California – the current State Energy Code requirements (commonly known as Title 24) and the State‐Mandated Solar requirements, which take effect in 2020. In most communities, we have found that solar is the best, most cost‐effective option for both D.R. Horton and our homebuyers to meet the current Title 24 Energy Code requirements. Thus, Horse Creek Ridge was designed using solar to meet the current Title 24 requirements, and as a result, we are required by the state to have solar on each home in the community.”When asked why that was not told to the potential homebuyers from the beginning, during the tour of the home, D.R. Horton spokesperson added that “solar requirements are communicated to customers via numerous marketing materials… and as an addendum to the home purchase agreement.” She pointed to an 8-page brochure, where solar is mentioned once on page 7. She also sent Team 10 an image of solar displayed on a model home—something the McKays said they never saw.There is no mention of solar or photos of any homes with solar on Horse Creek Ridge’s website. “I feel like I was deceived,” Carmen said. “We fell in love with the place. I felt like I was pushed in the corner.”Dan Zimberoff is an attorney not involved in this case, but he has seen solar disputes in the past. “A buyer needs to be aware,” Zimberoff said. “If you’re purchasing a new home and you see what that price is, ask the details. Is that really going to be the final price?” “We’re starting to remember why we left California,” Carmen said.The McKays ultimately decided not to buy the home. They hope their experience teaches others about the right questions to ask. “We were willing to pay the higher cost to live here, but I don't like being misled by builders,” Brian said.
